If Americans will vote in a guy who says "grab them by the pussy", is a known mobster wannabe and a visible racist, sexist and antisemetite, then No One is unelectable.

Come on, Trump has 2 divorces and married his Slovenian sex worker and yet people who once believed in traditional family values voted for him.

Anyone can get elected in America.

The Republicans have already defined what a "socialist" is, and our "buddy," Bloomberg reinforced it at the debate last night. They will use his own words against Bernie, and assert all kinds of idiotic and even slanderous material against him. Calling himself a Democratic Socialist reminds people of the misleading terminology of some committed communists. -- I can just hear the ads: "Vote for Sanders, and Welcome to the Democratic Socialist Republic of America." Of course, it's absolutely ridiculous, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately, I believe the GOP will annihilate him. And I'm really sorry to say so!

On your college campus everybody agreed with you. You'd go home for a holiday and get into an argument with your parents, but they were just your parents and who cares what they thought, right? but our men and women (nurses) were being put on planes and shipped over and coming back scarred, dead.. leaving the dead laying in the jungles of Vietnam.. I think we were desperate. And that changed me forever. The one thing I came away with.. is that you cannot just will people to your position.. You have to bring them with arguments that they can link to their own lives.

I do not hate Bernie in any way shape form or fashion.. But he is just like the republicans.. my way or the highway.. well you will get all the my way or the highway people on your side.. and then you have 70% to 80% who cannot relate to you and you lose the battle.

And or those who are independents will not come your way because in their minds they are better off with the devil they know then one they do not understand..

All of us were regarded, at best, as dirty, immoral, pot-smoking hippies, and Nixon and his people very effectively used the whole sex-drugs-rock'n'roll reputation to turn people against the movement altogether. By 1972 even the "establishment" was starting to object to the war but they hated the hippies even more.

this thread about 1972 and have to agree. That was my first year to vote. I remember it well.

Bernie not only cannot win the GE, but he will tag the party with the Socialist label if he is the nominee.

He is old enough to remember 1972, so it makes me wonder why he runs, especially in this very crucial year. Ego trip? More interested in advancing an ideology than defeating Trump? Does he think that, even if he loses, another 4 years of Trump will turn the nation toward socialism?

Sanders cannot win. He will lose and take the party and the nation down wih him. Neither the electoral college nor the majority of Americans will vote for a candidate identifying with the word socialism.

You have to look very hard to find anything about them on the Internet.

These and other movements like them have been effectively erased.

They have been replaced with a false stereotype of boomers as vacuous self interested hedonists, bent on destroying American society and the planet for their own pleasure.

I believe the right has successfully worked to drive out the history of activism since at least the days of Reagan.

Look at the DUP poll. Sanders support is not represented here at all, and sometimes I wonder why keep trying to change minds in an echo chamber.

I read the passion of the disappointment with McGovern. I'm a bit younger - not much - so obviously cannot speak to your disappointment.

My generation - just a decade later - still gravitated to injustice and took up the banner epitomized in the Clash's 'Sandanista' album, we loved King Sunny Ade, and the more hard core anti-war movement people looked to bands that I'm not going to list here, because in this day I'm sure they would be slammed as politically incorrect in one way or another.

What I find shocking or dismaying is that neo-colonialism a la Vietnam or Central/South America is not on the radar of most of the people who are in the most pain - the most desperate - the most passionate - of voters today.

Media has tried to label this generation as self-entitled. I get it. They have had to bring that wall of security closer to themselves IN THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!

This is not our battle anymore. No one was worrying about rising sea levels back then. No one figured they couldn't have a family.
It's not the same fight.

Trump will lose.

is the nominee.

But , if by some fluke, Sanders did win, how would he handle all the facets of government? He speaks only if one issue - domestic economics.

What foreign policies would he have? Who would he choose for a cabinet? How would he handle immigration, Iran, NATO, the World Bank, foreign trade, climate change, infrastructure, jobs creation, infrastructureetc.?

He speaks anger, drums up passionate anger among his followers to oppose the existing system, but his appeal to them is an emotional one, to appeal to people's resentments. In that respect, he is a populist from the left. He tells us who he will take down. But what will he build up? Who will work with him in government?

I've been working campaigns for 25 years. Hes toxic in most of America electorally. He dosent stand a chance in sotheast. He will hurt House races here. Hell, he's not a Democrat. Outside the liberal bubble voters see him as a self admitted socialist and wants to fundamentally change a health care system, many like and that isn't going to fly. He, in this neck of woods makes Trump look moderate on some issues. He will rip the party to shreds. We will be called socialists for generations. Hes a coastal candidate. To be honest, his angry, flailing anti wealthy look isn't attractive in many places. I'll support anyone over Trump but Sanders will get beat badly.

I also believe there is a chance we lose the House and certainly no chance we win back the Senate. I live in a red suburban district that has been flirting with trending purple. We have a new Democratic congresswoman that was swept in with the wave in 2018. She has a good organization but the Repubs will be throwing a ton of money into the district trying to take it back. The odds of her holding on to this seat are remote with Bernie at the top of the ticket. There are many other districts like this one. Politically I am pretty much aligned with Bernie but the reality here on the ground is that nationally he is most likely a disaster waiting to happen.

Thu Feb 20, 2020, 12:12 PM

wants to run against a self-described socialist. It's the dream candidate for the GOP.

Sanders will certainly get more young people out to vote for him, but I think too many people undervalue the damage Sanders will do to the much needed suburban voters and swing states.

I live in a conservative, rather Trump-friendly area with many disenchanted GOP voters that voted Dem in '18 and would like to vote Trump out this year. So many have told me that they won't be able to vote Dem if Sanders/Warren is the nominee. A lot simply won't just stay home or vote third party, but will hold their nose and vote Trump. Why? Even though they hate him personally, they are unwilling to take the risk of completely upsetting the economy and/or their livelihood. They'll rationalize it by voting for their economic interests.

So it's not just a question of increasing turnout, but it's taking a lot of people that would be Dem voters and scaring them to vote GOP. Also, a lot of Republicans that might not be motivated to vote will feel absolutely compelled to vote against a socialist candidate that runs on everything they are vehemently against. In this way, Sanders will supercharge GOP turnout as well (and it will kill down ballot races).

With a moderate, many of those disgruntled conservatives/independents will vote D and many GOPers that just don't want to be bothered with voting won't feel that their way of life will be destroyed if someone like Biden/Bloomberg/Klobuchar is elected. The young people upset with a dull, moderate candidate are more likely not to show up or vote third party than they are to vote for Trump. Too many of the needed moderate voters *will* vote for Trump if it is between a fairly stable economy and a socialist.

it will almost exclusively be a referendum on donnie and his special brand of authoritarian crazy.

if the economy, or at least the stock market, takes a nosedive over the summer, we're winning even if we nominate a ham sandwich.

if the economy, or at least the stock market, continues to climb, we're in big trouble even if we nominate the ghost of abraham lincoln.

so much depends on donnie going too far or the economy collapsing or or terrorist actions.

really, the only thing our choice of nominees does is change what choice of childish insults donnie uses.

now, if we win, then our choice of nominees certainly matters. but in terms of whether or not we win, i don't think it matters much at all.

remember (a) donnie cheats and (b) the media sucks at giving democrats a fair shot. our choice of nominee won't change either or those facts, at least not by november.

As long as we turn out and people don't get pissy and decide to either not vote or vote for Trump because the personally dislike Sanders.

If we turn out. We win. It really is that simple.

No matter who the ultimate choice is (and nothing is decided yet), we need to rally around that person and put our hurt feelings away for the greater good.

We all hope our candidate ends up on top, but some of us will be disappointed. That is inevitable, but this is FAR more important than any one person.

We can make it happen, we just have to work together. If people decide that their disdain for one candidate or another is reason enough to keep Trump, then we lose.

Given the excitement about this election Dems are going to come out in droves. We will not be divided. We will unite behind our nominee.

Trump has the base he has. Many have died off and the demographics continue to change. The number of crossover voters from Dem to Trump will be almost zero. The economy is not going to improve from here, but go down (coronavirus if nothing else and there was plenty before CoVID19 to worry about.)

Trump won with Russian help, and then by the slimmest of margins.

I am convinced our nominee, even a Bernie Sanders nominee, will win.

Obviously I hope that Sen Warren gets the nomination as she would make an outstanding President, but if Bernie or Amy or Joe or Pete win, then so be it. They will win.

The only way Bernie loses to the donald is if the corporate controlled DNC balks at giving full support to the Democratic nominee...

I would venture to say that the people who post on this board tend to be more on the liberal side which seems at variance with the results that most who commented they believe that Sanders would lose the election to Trump. I would like to point out that I believe that Sanders is also vulnerable in that his views on tariffs and the trade agreements were in agreement with Trump's. I can imagine how Trump could take advantage of his views as being in alignment with his.

The only issue that I see that is out standing is his Medicare for All and that has far less than universal enthusiastic support. It also appears to me that last nights debate was not beneficial and detracted from the most important issue.

That is the Republican's determination to establish a authoritarian presidency. For me this issue takes precedence. The very existence of our Democratic Republic is at stake. I don't find it very reassuring to watch what some have classified as a food fight rather than an a mature discussion of the most critical issue: The future of our nation. Only one candidate attempted to redirect the discussion to this threat.

I believe Sanders will win the popular vote by a larger margin than 2016 but will lose the electoral college in a bad way.

I hope I am wrong. I pray I am wrong. I will work my heart out to make myself wrong, but this is what I truly believe.

Will we have to be smart, will he have to run a good campaign, will things have to play out well? Yes, but it is certainly doable... for any of our candidates, and I think Bernie would put up a hell of a fight and a stark contrast to Trump.

Bernie will destroy us. He is the same as McGovern. I worked for McGovern. I believed his correctness on killing during the Viet Nam War was enough to get him elected. I was totally wrong. While killing is wrong, McGovern presented himself totally wrong.

...Bernie does exactly the same thing. He presents himself in a way that is offensive. He doesn't know, and his followers do not know, but those of us who have experienced enough, we know.

..Bernie supporters don't like the above idea. But it is the truth. George McGovern was destroyed by Nixon, and Trump will do the exact same thing to Bernie. You don't like it?..Ok, You don't like it, but it is the truth.

142. Here is an ad being runned by the Grandson of GHW Bush running against sanders

TX CD 22 is an open seat with Pete Olson retiring. The DCCC has targeted this seat for flipping. There are 15 candidates in GOP primary including the grandson of GHW Bush. Another candidate, Kathleen Wall, is running in the GOP primary and she spent $6 million in 2018 running in GOP primary for TX CD 2 and did not make GOP primary runoff. I have had Wall block walkers come to my house twice (I live in a very GOP neighborhood) and I have found Wall doorhanger on my door twice now.

Pierce Bush is running against socialism

Sri Preston Kulkarni is the leading Democrat for this seat (Sri has a GOP type and another person running against him in the Texas Democratic Primary) I texted this ad to Sri and he knew about it already. Sri Preston Kulkarni is a great guy and we need to flip this seat

If sanders is the nominee, we can forget about this seat and we will have Kevin McCarthy as speaker
