Buttigieg Praises Denmark as Best Place to Live the American Dream

Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg raised some eyebrows at Wednesday night's Democratic presidential debate in Nevada as he claimed that the "number one place to live out the 'American Dream' right now" is not the United States, but Denmark.

Asked what his stance was on Democratic socialist Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders' plan to require all companies to turn over up to 20 percent of their ownership to employees over time, Buttigieg said he thought "employee ownership of companies is a great idea."

However, he said, "I'm not sure it makes sense to command those companies to do it. If we really want to deliver less inequality in this country," Buttigieg said, "then, we've got to start with the tax code and we've got to start with investments in how people are able to live the American Dream, which is in serious, serious decline."

"As a matter of fact," Buttigieg said, "last time I checked, the list of countries to live out the American dream, in other words, to be born at the bottom and come out at the top, we're not even in the top ten." The "number one place to live out the American dream right now," he said, "is Denmark."

is to come out at the top is incorrect with me and I would suspect many others. My American dream if for the government to leave me the fuck alone. I am retired on a modest income and I have no desire to be rich. I want to be intoxicated however I want to be, I want clean air and water and safe food to eat. I want the financial cushion and the health care in my elder years the government promised everyone before I was born. And I want my country to act peacefully on the international stage as much and as often as possible.

I wish politicians could understand that not everyone wants a college degree, a mansion and a huge bank account. I have lived a happy, stress free life without these things.

by far - indicates that they don't care so much about money. Pete could get his McKinley job back in a heartbeat, earn millions, pay off Chasten's Education Master's Degree debt and live fancy. Instead, they rehabbed an old house in South Bend down the street from Pete's parents.

So - I think the American Dream for most of us is to have our children and grandchildren go to good schools in safe neighborhoods and not live in fear of becoming sick and getting old. I think Denmark represents that kind of American Dream. Not many oligarchs or plutocrats in Denmark.

were Pete's words, not mine. Perhaps just a poor choice of words. My point was those words do not reach many of us, because it's not what we're looking for.

referencing that per capita one was more likely to become a billionaire there, and not in the USA.

Pretty much boiled down to the fact that higher education was much more accessible in Denmark.
