Danish PM in US (2015): Denmark is not socialist

Danish PM in US: Denmark is not socialist

After seeing his country held up as an example in the US presidential debate, Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen used an address at Harvard to explain the Nordic model to a US audience suddenly very interested in Denmark. ...

"I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy,” Rasmussen said.

“The Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security for its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish,” he added. ....

We have universal health coverage - you don’t pay to see your doctor or go to the hospital. We have a high degree of social security. You are entitled to benefits if you lose your job, if you get sick, if you are disabled. We have one year of maternity leave, we have one subsidised early childhood education and care and we ensure care for our elderly if they cannot manage on their own,” he said.

“We also have a strong and fee educational system. Students in institutions for higher education and university do not pay for their education, on the contrary they receive educational grants for studying,” he added. ...

“So, what is the catch you might ask. The most obvious one, of course, is the high taxes. The top income tax in Denmark is almost 60 percent. We have a 25 percent sales tax and on cars the incise duties are up to 180 percent. In total, Danish taxes come to almost half of our national income compared to around 25 percent in the US. Quite a substantial difference,” he said.

a more appropriate question might be "which services should be socialized?" or "to which extent should that industry be socialized?" or "when does regulating that industry become socialist?"

I expect repubs to think in "good vs evil" but perhaps we need to have a more nuanced approach.

According to Prime Minister Rasmussen Denmark is a capitalist country.

Wow! That means Bernie has been wrong. Since Denmark is Bernie's ideal that means Bernie is not really a Democratic Socialist. He is a Danish-style Capitalist.

Now everybody can vote for him. Wow!

- The Danes pay a federal tax rate of 56% on their income, but only on income above $76,500.
- The first $28,400 of the price of a car is taxed at 85%, the rest is taxed up to 150%.
- 69.9% of Danes aged 16-64 are active in the labor market.
- 67% of Danish wage-earners are members of a trade union.
- Denmark is among the least indebted countries in the world.
If you add as "tax" what people in the US pay for tuition, health. insurance..., the difference might not be so big. And the Danes also pay less to the military, though that anyway is a quite small part of the taxes.
(1.19 versus 3.42 for Defence expenditure as a share of GDP).
