But, he explains, he is not interested in the White House. "I would likely end up causing a right-wing extremist to be president of the United States. That is not something I would be happy to do," he said.
Then he added for emphasis: "It would likely be a futile and losing campaign. That would not be too smart."

So, when you think someone can't win, and when you think that his ideas would not make it through Congress, then you don't support that person as a candidate. I am not exactly sure why you would characterize that as "hate". Perhaps you can explain it to us.

Then he added for emphasis: "It would likely be a futile and losing campaign. That would not be too smart."

I don't like "Medicare" for all, not because I don't want everyone to have health coverage but because I think it's not well thought out.

I don't like free college for all because there are so many who would abuse it (and I have good reason to believe that). I prefer student loan aid to those within certain financial categories who complete their course of studies with reasonable grades.

I don't like the way Bernie shouts constantly and reminds me of my abusive first husband.

I don't like the fact that Bernie thinks there should be no compromise, because he'll get nothing done.

I don't like the way he sulks when things aren't going his way.

I don't like his supporters who harass and verbally abuse those with different opinions and who disrupt debates (like last night), and he continually fails to confront the troublemakers.

I don't want a president who is 79 years old and has had a heart attack already but won't share his medical records after saying he would.

I don't like the way he changes his mind about rules depending on what's best for him at the moment.

I don't like those of his supporters trying to blackmail the party with their threat of not voting for another nominee.

And I really don't like him railing against OUR party that he won't join. I'm tired of being called "establishment," "neoliberal," and "elite."

I will say this... there was a time when I admired Senator Sanders but he's lost any good feelings I had for him in the last six years or so.

all. Amy has already said that 2/3 of dems in the Senate will not sign on.
Therefore, we have to ask is his candidacy worth losing swing districts in the House and Senate for a dream that can't pass.

Also, Bernie sees all of America's problems through the lens of Marxist class struggle; when we know for a fact a significant portion of Americans don't vote on policies exclusively (see "What's Wrong with Kansas&quot . George Bush got elected two times because people wanted to "have a beer with him" rather than Gore or Kerry. A lot of presidential politics is about charisma; which Bernie does not have.

Feb 2020

I signed up to give you guys a view from someone from Australia.

Here recently the country re-elected a conservative government again unfortunately, yet even conservative government supports our healthcare system, let alone ever criticise it in favour of anything close to what you guys have in your country.

We have a high minimum wage, we have the equivalent of what you guys call welfare except we call it social security and as long as someone needs it they can stay on it.

To have all this and many other our country’s benefits by having a pretty high cost of living (at least I think it is) but the minimum wage etc offers this.

In Australia we have our own problems that exist and we complain and fight about them,
But What I as a Australian and many other friends have asked each other is why on earth is America such a bad place to live if you are not wealthy, why is medical care for everyone who needs it such a major issue in your country along minimum wage and a bunch of other things.

And then I started reading this site here DU and I started to understand why.
I am Australian and have no dog in your race, but as an outsider I see people like Sanders and Warren as the only candidates fighting to really change to your system to just the basics of what ya in the rest of the western world enjoy.

I came here to see the democratic view and it shocked me to see so many attacks on Sanders especially for what you guys label as ‘pipe dreams’, to see some comments on a forum like this where Democrats (the equivalent of Labour Party here) are arguing that MFA would cost too much etc.

We have a system where everyone is entitled to Medicare (what we call our health care here) but people can also take our private insurance if they wish on top of the Medicare, basically if you want faster and more comfortable treatment you get private and pay the costs.

But the premise being that absolutely everyone gets healthcare and a tax is taken out of pay checks to pay for it, some pay less, some pay more depending on how much you earn.

Anyway, if we can do it, surely a wealthier stronger country can do it too.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for the welcome.

Don’t get me wrong, our Australian healthcare system is a little more complicated than I i laid out in my original post.

Here we have private insurance, but it’s a completely voluntary thing where if you have extra money and want ‘better’ care (mostly that just means a nice room to yourself in a hospital and maybe faster treatment for elective surgery etc), if you want it you go to a company and buy it.

But at a minimum, at the very least, absolutely any citizen here that requires healthcare treatment can either go to a hospital or a doctor and get it under what we call Medicare card, basically a card we are all issued which we present to hospital or doctor and it gets charged on behalf of government paying.

Depending on your wage, you may be subjected to a Medicare limit when visiting doctors and prescriptions etc and may have to pay more beyond a certain limit.

But when it comes to essential procedures for health, all costs are covered by the hospitals who are funded by the government.

Limitations on everything. It’s so time consuming to wade through.

Do you have free long-term care? Sanders’ plan includes that and it’d be such a huge weight off knowing that that would be covered.

of healthcare that those in the urban areas do.

The US has a lower % of people in urban areas than Australia does, which allows Australia to deliver health care to the majority of their population, which is concentrated in a few areas, in a more cost effective way than the US could.

My only fear is that if the Rethuglicans retain the Senate, they utterly immobilize his agenda and then subsequently proclaim it's a failure. And since historically, the party that does NOT hold the Presidency wins substantially in the House of Representatives, that in 2022 they recover all of Congress and fuck him and us royally.

I kind of fear too many taxes that will, of necessity, hit the 'middle class', of which I am a part. More taxes are fine as long as we get what we are paying for, but more than one revolutionary has won the battle only to lose the war against the corporate kleptocracy that can outlast 'our revolution'.

That said, I love Bernie, I strongly supported him in 2016 right up until he was mathematically eliminated, and, as with Yang and Sen Warren, cherish the IDEAS he brings to the national conversation.

The hate and vitriol aimed at Hillary Clinton and her supporters cost us that election—one of the factors. He and his supporters refuse to discuss or engage in policy discussions. Bernie supported that and was so focused on his own agenda that he couldn’t see the long term consequence of his actions. He and his supporters don’t care if we end up with Trump for another 4 years or even the first four years.

The approach he and his supporters take does not build a winning coalition. Instead it divides and hurts us

And yes I will vote for him if he’s the nominee but I do not like him or the abuse his supporters cast at many people. I no longer work in local politics because of the vitriol at Hillary supporters by many activists here. I will engage with other states and ignore here.

Democrats aren't anti-Bernie... were merely anti-trump and believe Bernie can't beat him... Bernie poll numbers aren't much above 30% (even with the 50%+ backing of younger people)… nationwide he appears to be a point or two above trump at this time but that does not account for the swing states which are crucial and common belief amongst those (other than the Bernie base) that look at these things closely… a Bernie nominee would cost us House and Senate seats

if you look at next closest rival as anybody but Bernie, you get a clearer picture... hey, I like Bernie... his demeaner is off-putting but he's been a good Senator for us and we here in Vermont keep electing him... but even in this special little liberal state we cannot implement the policies he advocates

I take everything with a grain of salt and research and study when I need... what I see is that the best way to get to health coverage for everyone, seriously address climate change, make sure women's rights are not taken back, bring some sense of civility back into our lives and get things done is to make sure we keep the House, take the Senate and chose a nominee who will keep the Democrats and bring in all those disgusted with trump... yeah, I get it, Bernie inspires people, especially younger people and we all love his ideas (well most of us) but trump has changed this Country and we have been taken so far back by him that we are walking a fine line here

we are pragmatic because we know history, we know what is possible... we live in HOPE but fight in the real world...

103. His policies

Are not new or even his, they will never be implemented, as I am sure even he knows on some level... he helped fuck up one election delivering this nightmare and now he is doing it again. For what, ego, if he cared about the good of the country he would not be running. He is being propped up by Russia and R’s who are not going to vote dem, I am sure he is aware of this and doesn't care. He hires divisive/ destructive people and refuses to take responsibility by stopping them/ firing them etc.

At the last debate he was pretty much beserk. He is the worst possible candidate, he will be demolished in the gen election campaign. He just had a heart attack and will not release records. I could go on but I wouldn’t want to branded as a “hater” for speaking truth. There is a lot more.

107. FDR proposed publicly funded health care in 1933.
Fri Feb 21, 2020, 08:50 AM
Feb 2020

Truman proposed universal health care in 1949.

Ted Kennedy

Jimmy Carter

Hillary Clinton

and even Richard Nixon, of all people

...all proposed universal health care.

Let's not pretend that Sanders is somehow unique in proposing it or that he was the first. Political history does exist prior to 2015.

Democrats and the Democratic party have fought for all the things that are good in this country against huge opposition from Republicans and RW media. It sickens me when he insults Democrats as if they are no better than the Republicans. Makes me want to puke.

I'm not a Bernie hater. I don't know any Bernie haters. I'm one of those people who would vote for him if he is the nominee.

As for his "policies," I don't think he really has any. He has aspirational ideas that cannot be made to happen in the next four years. He will not succeed in implementing any of them, even if elected.

IMHO, Sanders doesn't have policies. He has no plans to implement or pay for anything, just pipe dreams.

I just don't like him as a Democratic candidate for President of the United States, especially when he can't commit to being a full-time Democrat.

He says good things, many of which I concur with in large part.

But his actual accomplishments over MANY years in Congress just do not measure up to those of my candidate or those of others. This is fact, not opinion.

Comparing Bernie's Words to Actual Accomplishments: the weight is very heavy on the words. We badly NEED accomplishments!

Bernie has also NOT shown himself to be a Team Player. It's too much His Way or the highway. We NEED a Team Player.

My candidate has proven herself to be a Team Player, with vision, who has plans actually to implement her vision.

Plus, as the LV debate showed, she can go head-to-head (or toe-to-toe, LOL) effectively with a billionaire without looking like she's going to pop a cork in mid-sentence or mid-gesture.

I just don’t feel he has any sort of governing ability whatsoever. A president has to lead, convince, cajole, and compromise to enact his agendas. Obama could do that. Sanders? No, I don’t believe for a second that he has the temperament to be the chief executive.

I also don’t think he’s electable, but that’s just speculation, and I understand others believe differently.

121. CNN-Sanders' agenda: Its cost -- possibly $60 trillion -- would set a peacetime US record
Fri Feb 21, 2020, 04:43 PM
Feb 2020

Here is the CNN article on which the OP was based

Sanders' plan, though all of its costs cannot be precisely quantified, would increase government spending as a share of the economy far more than the New Deal under President Franklin Roosevelt, the Great Society under Lyndon Johnson or the agenda proposed by any recent Democratic presidential nominee, including liberal George McGovern in 1972, according to a historical analysis shared with CNN by Larry Summers, the former chief White House economic adviser for Barack Obama and treasury secretary for Bill Clinton.

Sanders' plan would also increase the size of government far more than any modern Republican president, including Ronald Reagan, has sought to cut it, Summers' analysis concluded.

"On the spending side, ... this is far more radical than all previous presidencies, on either the right or the left," Summers said in an interview. "The Sanders spending increase is roughly 2.5 times the size of the New Deal and the estimated fiscal impact of George McGovern's campaign proposals. This is six times as large of a growth of government than any of the Ronald Reagan dismemberments. We are in a kind of new era of radical proposal."

Exact cost projections on all of Sanders' proposals aren't available, in part because he hasn't fully fleshed out some of the ideas he's embraced (such as universal pre-K and child care). But a wide variety of estimates put the likely cost of the single-payer health care plan he has endorsed around $30 trillion or more over the next decade. Depending on the estimates used, including projections from his own campaign, the other elements of the Sanders agenda -- ranging from his "Green New Deal" to the cancellation of all student debt to a guaranteed federal jobs program that has received almost no scrutiny -- could cost about as much, or even more than, the single-payer plan. That would potentially bring his 10-year total for new spending to around $60 trillion, or more.
