What Are the Chances Sanders Has Another Heart Attack Before November?

https://slate.com/technology/2020/02/bernie-sanders-heart-attack-health-risk-profile-campaign.html

The information we have reveals a lot, though more comprehensive records would be better.

In early October, while campaigning in Nevada, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was rushed to the hospital experiencing chest pain. He was admitted and had two drug-eluting heart stents placed in his left anterior descending artery—the one commonly known as the “widow-maker.” Three days later, the campaign released a statement confirming what any practicing physician could deduce—the senator had experienced a heart attack.

In the months since, he’s emerged as the frontrunner in a competitive race, keeping up a busy campaigning schedule and performing energetically in the debates. The news of his heart attack largely receded from the coverage of the race, and he recently announced he won’t be sharing more information about it, despite his October promise to make all of his medical records public. (It’s worth noting that in our fragmented system, the concept of a “full” medical record is actually a kind of fantasy. What would prove useful here would be more comprehensive original records, not just summaries; in Sanders’ case, even just a few key documents from the past year expanding more on what happened in October would be clarifying.)

If Sanders were to honor his promise to release his “full” records, a nearly complete analysis of his short-term health risks could be made. As a physician who assesses these types of risks on a daily basis, I believe that all candidates, especially older ones—and particularly Michael Bloomberg, who has just revealed that he has heart disease significant enough to warrant coronary stenting in the past—should level with the American people and release not just summaries from their personal physicians but comprehensive and detailed medical records. But even with the information we have now, it’s possible to take a meaningful look at the risks of further health problems cropping up during the senator’s campaign. I considered the risk that, between now and Nov. 3, Sanders might experience any of the following: a second heart attack, another life-threatening emergency, any event that would require hospitalization (including any “false alarm”), or even death. The risk is not trivial, and is worth explaining in full.

snip lots of detailed risk analysis - well worth the read

Here’s what they found: From the day they left the hospital, the one-year risk of at least one rehospitalization for any reason in Medicare beneficiaries who suffered a heart attack like Sanders’ was about 50 percent (the baseline annual risk among his age cohort is more like 1 in 6). Again, by virtue of four incident-free months on the trail, that number is now lower for Sanders. But his chance of another hospitalization between now and November alone likely remains between 30–35 percent. While the daily risk is low, around 0.17 percent, we have more than 250 days to go until Election Day. The risks add up.

I like his ideas, but, let's face the hard, cold facts, he would get crushed in the GE and he would lose the House to the repigs and forget about taking back the Senate.

Bernie has never been vetted by the right wing slime machine.

and he'll unleash his attack machine the minute Bernie is declared the Democratic nominee, and it's going to get ugly.

With Bernie's health issues, I fear the campaign will cause another MI.

heart problems.

One of the meds Sanders is on now (I saw a list posted here) is for heart failure, and I'd guess there's a very good chance he does have some degree of heart failure from the heart attack.

His odds of making a full (or at least better) recovery would be much greater if he'd drop out of the race.

I'm guessing he decided to risk his health (and to risk having Democrats vote for someone who might not make it to election day, let alone be able to serve a full term if elected) because he wants to win so badly, and this would be his last chance to run.

I could be wrong about this.

But I won't believe I'm wrong unless Sanders releases full medical records, at least those pertaining to his heart problems, and those records prove I'm wrong.

raises a huge red flag.

What is he hiding that he doesn't want us to see?

If there is something and he's not telling us, then he's doing a great disservice to the country.

It is the first thing I notice about him when he is on the debate stage. The strenuous conditions of the campaign trail cannot be good for someone who recently had a heart attack. He appears to be a type A personality and vulnerable to high blood pressure and heart disease. I would think a life of less stress would help him to live longer.

7. I know a guy who had a heart attack

I know a guy who had a heart attack in his mid-50's and lived to 75 without another event. The key thing was that he started to take it real easy and chill-out rather than get stressed. He eventually lived to 85.

Bernie should consider whats more important, his health or President. He seems to get real wound up quick.

If he's on a debate stage and Trump riles him up using some bull shit or lies into a coronary its going to be a disaster for all.

14. Trump?

Trump looks like a dirty fighter to me. I'm sure at college he's the type of guy who would go straight for the balls in a dorm scuffle.

He's so cunning, in Bernie's case he'd go straight for the heart.

You can see in the debates when Bernie's face gets flushed and he's losing it. Its a dead giveaway to the dirtbags like Trump.

Those close to Bernie should be discouraging him to run against the psychopath.

13. And Bernie's heart attack happened

at a much older age than the guy you knew. Recuperation in one's 50s is a lot different than in one's 70s. Meanwhile, Sanders is doing the opposite of what a person should do after a heart attack - "take it real easy and chill-out rather than get stressed". Sanders looks stressed all the time.

70’s and back on the campaign trail in a few days. Bernie has heart disease most likely and that
diagnosis is what he’s hiding.Medicine can keep him going, for now. Future uncertain in the time-frame we are concerned about.

16. I'd say it would be damned unlikely
Fri Feb 21, 2020, 02:18 PM

I had a friend that had a non-stemi, not a MI, when he was 54. They went in and stented the lesion, but they also checked out all the other arteries and stented other lesions that looked problematic....and his healthcare wasn't nearly the type that Congress gets! His Drs. would, at a minimum do the same. So it would be pretty unlikely he would have another MI unless the stent itself failed. Stent failure rate is ridiculously low.
