Bernie Sanders briefed by U.S. officials that Russia is trying to help his presidential campaign

U.S. officials have told Sen. Bernie Sanders that Russia is attempting to help his presidential campaign as part of an effort to interfere with the Democratic contest, according to people familiar with the matter.

President Trump and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have also been informed about the Russian assistance to the Vermont senator, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

It is not clear what form that Russian assistance has taken. U.S. prosecutors found a Russian effort in 2016 to use social media to boost Sanders campaign against Hillary Clinton, part of a broader effort to hurt Clinton, sow dissension in the American electorate and ultimately help elect Donald Trump.

“I don’t care, frankly, who Putin wants to be president,” Sanders said in a statement to The Washington Post. “My message to Putin is clear: stay out of American elections, and as president I will make sure that you do.

Under the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, an entity directly or indirectly established by a federal candidate or officeholder is not allowed to “solicit, receive, direct, transfer, or spend funds in connection with an election for Federal office” unless the “funds are subject to the limitations, prohibitions, and reporting requirements” of federal law.

According to Our Revolution’s tax returns showing contribution amounts but not contributor names, data compiled and first reported by the Associated Press, from 2016 to 2018 Our Revolution raised almost $1 million dollars from contributors who gave in excess of the applicable $5,000 contribution limit, including multiple contributions of between $100,000 and $300,000. Our Revolution has not disclosed any of its contributors to the FEC, as required by federal campaign finance law.

Exactly. We already have confirmation that polls were manipulated to favor Trump... and manipulating polls to favor the candidate that Trump could most easily defeat would certainly make a lot of sense. It's definitely not beyond the realm of possibility or likelihood.

No matter what, from this point on, the Bernie Sanders campaign will be tainted and under suspicion. For the good of the country, he should withdraw... in my opinion. (Others may have opinions that differ from mine, and that's okay, but this is MY opinion.)

We will have to agree that we disagree.
Okay, well, whatever. I'm afraid I must point out, however, that we don't simply "disagree". The fact of the matter is that you're wrong. Whether or not you choose to admit it is another matter entirely. That's fine. But I do give you strong props for the fact that you recognize that you're arguing from a position of weakness, and have chosen to try an execute a face-saving maneuver by pretending that "both sides" have valid points.

All I'm trying to say is that it's VERY clear that manipulation has happened and CONTINUES to happen on behalf of Trump. I see absolutely no reasonable argument against also being suspicious of the poll results that appear to benefit Bernie. We already know for a fact that Russia is working on Bernie's behalf. We already know that his campaign has been tainted as a result. It does not take an extraordinary "leap of faith" to also presume that anything at all that benefits Bernie also has Russian fingers in it. But, it does take lot of "faith" and myopia to flat out deny it.

Goodbye for now.

Bernie and Trumps campaign were both mentioned in that report as being aided by Russia. Did you not read any of the report?

(Volume I, Part IV, pgs. 146-147, 166-167, 173)
— Karoun Demirjian

2:30 p.m.: Russian interference sought to boost Bernie Sanders in 2016, report says
The report provides a fresh look at allegations that the Russian-based Internet Research Agency not only interfered in the 2016 campaign on social media on behalf of Donald Trump but also to help Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Internal IRA documents “referred to support for the Trump campaign and opposition to candidate Clinton,” according to the report. While much of this section of the report is redacted, it cites directions to IRA operators not to harm Sanders.

“Main idea: Use any opportunity to criticize Hillary [Clinton] and the rest (except Sanders and Trump — we support them),” quotes the report.
Allegations of the pro-Sanders strategy by Russian influencers came up in 2018, when the Justice Department charged 13 individuals and three companies with interfering illegally.

108. You think all those Sanders supporters who shared Bot posts in the GE were "intellectually weak?"
Fri Feb 21, 2020, 09:03 PM
Feb 2020

A pair of Clemson University researchers, at the request of The Washington Post, examined English-language tweets identified as coming from Russia, many of which were designed to influence the election. It is impossible to say how many were targeted at Sanders supporters because many don’t include his name. Some 9,000 of the Russian tweets used the word “Bernie,” and those were “liked” 59,281 times and retweeted 61,804 times.

But that was only one element of the Russian effort to target Sanders supporters, the researchers said. Many thousands of other tweets, with no direct reference to Sanders, were also designed to appeal to his backers, urging them to do anything but vote for Clinton in the general election.

“I think there is no question that Sanders was central to their strategy. He was clearly used as a mechanism to decrease voter turnout for Hillary Clinton,” said one of the Clemson researchers, Darren Linvill, an associate professor of communications. The tweets examined in the new analysis “give us a much clearer understanding of the tactics they were using. It was certainly a higher volume than people thought.”

If Bernie "wins" the party's nomination... it will be tainted. People will always wonder... if he earned it fair and square. People will wonder if it's even worth voting in a process that's "rigged" by the Russians.

Is it time to go back to letting the PARTY pick our nominee... in vape-filled backrooms? At least we know that those doing the picking are loyal to the party and have both the party and the country's best interests in mind.

Having a nominee picked by Russia (or heavily influenced by Russian manipulation) really doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I'm against it.

The damage has been done. Trump is likely to win a second term.

to do or should do.

It is kind of a 'can't win' situation. Which is what Putin wants.

If Bernie tries to be really transparent, no one will believe him or his surrogates when they say anything.

If he keeps on keeping on as he seems to be, we can count on him doing pretty well in the rest of the primaries but then (perhaps) losing in the end. In that case his Russian 'supporters' will pull out all stops to draw Bernie supporters away from the Democratic party to vote Green or Libertarian. And, let's not forget that a certain member of the US Armed Services from HI who is in the race may well run as a third party candidate.

What, we wonder, will the FBI be able to do? They weren't able to stop Cozy Bear in '16 because of Moscow Mitch. Can they now, without the concerted support of the US Congress and Administration (no way they're gonna get THAT from the Senate or from Trump).

No, Putin is trying to ratfuck us all so Trump can get a second term and throw this nation into chaos. That is EXACTLY what he wants, and that is not Bernie's fault.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
