REPORT

Sanders, however, has previously warned of election interference. In January, he said, "Let me be clear: We must not live in denial while allowing Russia and other state actors to undermine our democracy or divide us. Russia targets the divisions in our society; we will work to heal those divisions."
Friday, the senator called again for an end to Russian meddling, and suggested that some of the bad press his supporters have received may, in fact, be a false flag to stir conflict in the Democratic presidential race.
"I don't care, frankly, who Putin wants to be president," Sanders told The Washington Post. "My message to Putin is clear: Stay out of American elections, and as president I will make sure that you do."
"In 2016, Russia used Internet propaganda to sow division in our country, and my understanding is that they are doing it again in 2020. Some of the ugly stuff on the Internet attributed to our campaign may well not be coming from real supporters," he added.

(18,239 posts)The Newsweek story says "meddling on his behalf".
U.S. officials have told Sen. Bernie Sanders that Russia is attempting to help his presidential campaign as part of an effort to interfere with the Democratic contest, according to people familiar with the matter.
President Trump and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have also been informed about the Russian assistance to the Vermont senator, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.
It is not clear what form that Russian assistance has taken. U.S. prosecutors found a Russian effort in 2016 to use social media to boost Sanders campaign against Hillary Clinton, part of a broader effort to hurt Clinton, sow dissension in the American electorate and ultimately help elect Donald Trump.

The Left: Democrats and Republicans are similar.
Democrats: We are not.
Also Democrats: We need to elect moderates and have Republicans in our administrations to attract Republican voters.
Maybe we should try to get the votes of people whose values much more closely align with our own than go after the Susan Collins type voter.

(13,058 posts)I think not. This was a calculated leak intended to hurt Bernie's campaign. And I don't think it's so much a case of the Russians trying to help Bernie. It's more a case of their trying to wreck any kind of havoc on the whole process. I think the last thing Putin would want is Bernie in the White House.
