Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI'm confused about this new revelation that Russia is helping Sanders.
There are two running contradictions that are crossing streams. Or are they?
The first, that the polls claim that just about all the candidates can beat Trump, and Bernie would be in the top two strong contenders against Trump, depending on the poll. Now, hold that thought.
The second, that Russia is in favor of Sanders winning the primary so he can go up against Trump. Now, if you think about it, there can be only one reason why the Russians want Bernie. It's because they feel confident that they can do something that will influence the vote in Trump's favor. And my best guess is that they are confident that they can effectively meddle by spreading fears of socialism to depress the vote for Independents and Democrats and increase it for Republicans. That's the only way that I see a practical reason why they are picking a dog in this fight.
Now, let's go back to the first observation, where polls show that any candidate can beat Trump, and Bernie would be in the top two contenders. Don't you think that the people in those polls already know Bernie's Socialist leanings? What could Russia possibly inflict in this fight that would change their minds?

If he is the nominee,he wont be able to withstand the attacks on his past record as a supporter of south America leftist dictators and the myriad of other things that the right will pound him with.

(5,928 posts)There's no paradox when you take into account that the polls quoted are national polls, and not polls taken in the various swing states.
Also, we must keep in mind that Putin's aim is to promote contention and chaos in our society. For that reason, Russia would support the most polarizing figure they could find among our candidates.
It's no fault of Bernie's that he might drive huge numbers of American voters into a frothing fury. Indeed, it may be a virtue. But it's a virtue he possesses in greater degree than our other candidates do.
