I voted

Last night I filled out my mail-in ballot for the 2020 Democratic nominee for President of the United States. My choice was largely based upon the sad fact that we are no longer a united nation. Of course defeating Donald Trump is absolutely necessary to restore and preserve our democracy. Just getting rid of Trump will not unite our country nor undo the damage that he has done to our civil society.

Trump’s successor will have to address the toxic minority that elected him. Millions of people whose priorities have nothing to do with the America I grew up in and for which I served in uniform have only grown more malignant in the personality cult that is the Trump presidency. The rule of law, common decency and civil discourse have been trashed by a malignant narcissist who can’t tell governance from reality television.

With a few exceptions, we have strong candidates poised to take on Donald the Terrible. On an even playing field with no interference from Trump’s Russian patron, they should be able to easily unseat the most inept and corrupt incumbent president in history. Moving forward confidently from the aberration we have been living in will require a president able to reconcile the disparate factions we have become.

The incoming president must not marginalize the losing party no matter how much Trump and the GOP have done that since 2016. If we are fortunate enough to hold the House and take back the Senate, playing Mitch McConnell’s game will only alienate persuadable conservatives and perpetuate legislative gridlock. We need to return to a president for all Americans. Self righteous anger and vitriol will not get us back to the country we used to be. It will only keep us in separate camps.

Our next president must work to restore a truly representative democracy where wealth does not bestow political influence and privilege. Most of the things that divide us have been cultivated by well funded dark money groups to prevent majority rule from working against the moneyed minority.

We have been spared a national or global crisis that would only have been worsened by Trump’s inability to lead. Trump has not had to address the American people in a call for unity in a time of crisis. We need a leader who will inspire the nation and not incite a cult. I only see one candidate who could fill that role. My vote was cast for Elizabeth Warren. Whoever wins the nomination will have my total support but supporting Warren will rekindle the hope for something better that we felt with Barack Obama.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
