Bernie Sanders warned Russia on Friday to stay out of U.S. elections as he confirmed that American intelligence officials had briefed him on Russian efforts to help his presidential campaign.
snip===================================================================
All of us remember 2016, and what we remember is efforts by Russians and others to try to interfere in our elections and divide us up, Sanders said. Im not saying thats happening, but it would not shock me.
Investigations after the 2016 election found that Russia had tried to intervene in support of Trump through social media campaigns and other actions. Prosecutors also said some of the actions were designed to support Bernie Sanders against Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries.

(2,275 posts)There ARE established people in every old bureaucracy taking paychecks and maintaining their social network to ensure the checks keep coming. Ask any anthropologist.
That's a given. And it's refreshing to see someone on OUR side calling it like it is. Trump has been winning lots of hearts for simply sounding like he's being straighforward. But Trump lies constantly. He's a self-serving demogogue. He attacks the "elites" and the "swamp" and simply because he's associated with the Republicans he gets raves from all those Americans who see their miserable lives are indeed worse than the establishment people. And, yes, Trump also attacks people of color, refugees and women for the same self-serving effect.
Bernie DOESN'T attack non-whites, he ISN'T a Republican oligarch working for the Russians (and, no, those pro-Bernie memes from Russia were created by Putin, not Bernie to create a disturbance), and says what all the pundits have been too chicken shit to say all these years. As a result he's getting a lot of nods from the people who vote Democrat but who are NOT impressed by the slide to Right since Reagan. Finally Bernie (and Elizabeth) are questioning this rightward tilt. They are onto LOUDLY (finally!) how the corporations, esp. after Citizens United, have taken our democracy out from underneath us.
Keep it up Senator Sanders!

(35,454 posts)and sometimes the critiques are not valid. He's biting the hand that feeds him while taking everything he can get. It bothers me how he hooks onto the Dem party for the benefits he can get and then turns around and disparages the party and constantly complains about it. Honestly, it makes me question his character.

(35,454 posts)however, I don't see M4A getting passed for a long time. What could be done immediately is reeling in big pharma and doing something about for profit hospitals. What I don't think some people understand, especially younger ones, is you still pay a monthly premium though not nearly as high and you may need supplemental health insurance.

He tried to do the same thing in 2016, creating chaos and anarchy, but did not realize just how formidable an opponent he faced in Hillary Clinton. It was obvious then by his anger and less than lukewarm support for Hillary, and proving in 2020 by his tweet that this man has no loyalty to the Democratic party, and is using the label for his own narcissistic purposes. It was sad in 2016, and it's even sadder in 2020 that so many people are buying in to his bullshit.

Sanders could lose in plenty of future states but somehow the urgency to remove seems to be now

Although this tweet of Sanders' is unhelpful at best, and I wish he hadn't sent it: I think that he is simply saying that the powers that be of BOTH parties (redundantly re-emphasizing BOTH, as this is not divisive if it applies to all sides involved) can't subvert the will of the people.
But candidly, his 'establishment' line doesn't resonate with me at all. He's been there too long to not be considered part of that establishment, and other posters have noted Democratic leaders who are unquestionably part of the establishment and also great leaders.

(11,996 posts)the Democratic primary electorate is divided into only two parts. Bernie Sanders's victory in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary reminded observers of what we have known for a long time, namely that the smaller of these two parts remains united in favor of his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. The larger moderate one remains split, not quite evenly, between Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, and Joe Biden.
We know which side the Democratic National Committee, the party's leadership in Congress, wealthy mega-donors, and luminaries like the Obamas and the Clintons are on. We also know that they are willing to do pretty much anything to prevent Sanders from winning the nomination in 2020. The question is whether they will be able to.

(20,755 posts)Like [Redacted], Bernie has a noisy, highly motivated cadre of groupthinkers within his supporters. And they form a large enough and/or noisy enough segment of his overall support that without them, his candidacy would not be viable.
But the noisier they are, the more like-minded groupthinkers they attract, and the happier with their anointed leader they are, the more vigorously they defend him, attack non-believers, and attract attention to him and his utterances.
Bernie knows perfectly well that a) they are but a segment of his support, and their ginned-up, groupthinky irrationality can do him some harm with uncommitted voters; but also b) the noisier and more aggressive they are, the more successful his campaign LOOKS, and the more momentum builds.
He seems to be making the "b" choice pretty regularly, because, apparently, the end justifies the means.

(518 posts)Since it is known that Trump is Putin's choice, why is Russia also helping Sanders?
Are the Russians hedging their bets? Hoping to suck up to whoever is the eventual winner?
I think that the Russians calculate that Sanders is beatable - more beatable than another Dem candidate - and they want him to be the Dem nominee because he's be easier for Trump to beat than another candidate (who, I don't know).

(43,112 posts)Sanders is their pawn, willing or unwittingly, doesn't much matter.
They trashed a good candidate in 2016. This time they're picking their own opponent.
Power and money, fascism vs democracy.
If we don't get this right, democracy will go underground worldwide for 150 years.

(1,898 posts)Let's differ on the issues. If you think The Green New Deal is the wrong approach to the climate crisis, fine. Whatever your differences with Sanders may be, you must agree that the country and world need rapid and accurate results from primaries and caucuses which are beyond reproach.
And yet...

(5,969 posts)a DUer made the fitting comparison to Trump's deep state conspiracy bs that his cult supporters lap up.
So whenever he's faced with something inconvenient, BS reverts to pointing fingers at the "establishment" to give his supporters something to hate. We already see this disdain against Democrats here on DU, it's his theme and his supporters do whatever he wants.
In short, it's a method to distract from something else.

(26,273 posts)that is the topic under discussion.
That was an ill advised slight he made and its not one I think he will have an easy to correct and it will have alienated atleast some people that might have been leaning his way and it could cost him the nomination.

(18,229 posts)Was there a need to post that particular tweet on the same day that we found out about Russia's latest machinations?
It could have been a true "not me, us" moment. but instead it almost sounded like "me/us against them", with Democrats lumped in with Republicans as "them".

(3,363 posts)them. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant, but they see career politicians who constantly vote based on their wallet and what their donors want, more than the people as a problem for both sides and criticism of those establishment politicians resonate with a lot of voters. I'd prefer Bernie not use those tactics, but they seem to work for him since he's based his 40 year message on fighting against those types of people.
The establishment Dems have also attacked Bernie pretty consistently, so I can understand his frustration. They are actively trying to stop him from winning the nomination, even if it's what the people want. That's not healthy for Democracy.
