Democratic Primaries

From Bernie Sanders yesterday!
I have posted this before.. but this is exactly what I was talking about
"I have this overpowering urge to stand up and yell "What the hell is wrong with people"
Supporting an Independent and or a former republican mayor over a field of dedicated long term Democrats (and that includes Sen Warren.. she has been in the party quite a while)..
Seriously.. I am not calling them bad people.. but you have honest to God Democrats who put their names on the line as Democrats .. I just do not get it!.. Farther left in your political philosophy.. We have Senator Elizabeth Warren.. It just does not get any better for the lefter side of the party... A pragmatic liberal.. holy cow, we have a bunch for you.. VP Biden (who has actual experience in the executive office), Amy Klobuchar (long past time for a woman) and Pete Buttigieg.. (Up and coming young politician who can think so quickly on his feet)
Guys I just do not get it.. Sanders or Bloomberg either one.. I just don't.."

(15,768 posts)His entire campaign in 2016 was adopted by the party. He brought the party to its progressive beliefs. Hes a miracle. So many issues were brought to the front of the american people that were never discussed before at least mainstream. I dont understand the negative. We should be applauding him daily.

(22,756 posts)wouldn't say he's a miracle Bernie is another "radical" thinking person who was in the right place at the right time... he's done okay in Vermont (I'm a Vermonter)
a lot of people have done good things that have changed communities, corporations, countries... Ralph Nader did some pretty awesome things (The Motor Vehicle Safety Act and other reforms) but he sure wrecked havoc in 2000...
Bernie's voice has been a force of good but his "my way or the highway" attitude is not what we need right now... a person can be influential, do great things for society and get much accolades but that doesn't mean they all should (could) be President.... Bernie is so absorbed in his ideology and his sense that "he is the only one who can fix it" is too reminiscent of others that have done great damage... Bernie has inspired so many and has done good, but that doesn't mean he has to be President to make those things he advocates more possible
Bernie as nominee will likely lose us the Presidency (my heartfelt opinion) and lose us Democrats in the House and Senate...

President Obama moved the conversation forward from the neverending arguments of the 1960's, friend, when most Americans had no idea whom Senator Sanders was.
President Obama changed the American conversation more profoundly than any president since Ronald Reagan, and in a much better direction for we, the people.
All of us build together, standing taller on the ideas of those who came before us.
Secretary Clinton's policy proposals (adopted by the Party) were progressively nudged by Senator Warren, not the Vermont senator. Unfortunately, secretary Clinton got little air time about her progressive political ideas.
I like Bernie, but I have heard his tune before now. This tune has been with us, sometimes more offkey, sometimes less, since at least the 1960's. It sees our problems very well & rages against its natural allies, those trying to make real progress; yet, it is, sadly, light on solutions.
This one continues to hope Bernie will cut out the absurd attacks on "the democratic establishment", an attack right out of the last century (circa the '60's).
Senator Sanders needs to find a way to work with the millions of people in the trenches who are already working to make things better.
Insulting these folks is not a good strategy if one wants success. No one person can achieve much without working with those folks.
Right now, Bernie & his top people bash even the folks offering constructive criticism. This is hardly a good strategy if you actually want to get something done for the American people.

Ralph Nader's purity caused us a lot of heartburn as a country.
Yet, Ralph Nader's activism saved so many of our lives on our nation's roads. This is not hyperbolic. Ralph Nader's activism saved hundreds of thousands (maybe more) of American lives.
Ralph Nader is many faceted.
Although disliking Bernie is a near impossibility (he is adorable in his irascible way) for me, comparing him to Ralph Nader seems unfair to Mr. Nader.
What has Bernie Sanders done constructively that is remotely close to Ralph Nader's "Unsafe at Any Speed", or Consumer Reports?
If such a thing exists, Bernie is strangely silent about it.

(22,912 posts)I realize that among those of us inclined to a "Question Authority" state of mind, that most references to "the Establishment" are meant as negative, but the actual words convey something real. The genuine debate is over whether there is any thing wrong with being "established".
The establishment of any social grouping are those who are well established in leadership roles, and who thus wield considerable influence, usually to further the agenda which led to them occupying those leadership roles in the first place. The term "maverick" implies someone who breaks with the prevailing wisdom of those who generally control the leadership of a social grouping.
The "establishment" can be right, or the "establishment" can be wrong, but the term itself is not meaningless, although how literally it is applied to those aligned with prevailing forces can vary, and be overly dramatic. In 2008 during the primaries Hillary Clinton started out with the support of most of what could fairly be called "the establishment" of the Democratic Party. By 2010 the establishment of the Democratic Party now represented Barack Obama's alliance, with some of the same people belonging but newer elements also. The change of DNC Chairs that often happens when a new Democratic President takes office is a ritual changing of that guard.

(13,485 posts)I think of that film of Hitler speaking to a massive crowd in Nürnberg (I think) with his hands high, fingers splayed, bobbing his head back and forth while looking up and speaking with that growling sound. That's the extreme but the idea of appealing to the public through empty rhetoric to capture emotional appeal is an old ploy. It's up to the public, us, to decern what is sincere and what is populist crowd-speak and not be captured by the latter.

(765 posts)I think Bernie says this because he knows that if he's the nominee the party establishment that he hates so much will likely suck it up and support him, because they are good Democrats. So he gets to have his cake and eat it too, he can insult the party with impunity and expect their support in the GE.
Sometimes, it feels like the party is in an abusive relationship with Bernie.

Sanders, on the other hand, almost guarantees us a loss. Not just for his low ceiling of support, or his newly revealed support from the Russians which skews results and then drops away during the general, leaving him right back at that low ceiling. But also for his own mouth. He just called us his enemies. He does it all the time. We talk all the time about "not alienating" that non-existent youth vote revolution. It DOESN'T EXIST! And in pandering to this phantom, he alienates ACTUAL voters. Like me.

(6,042 posts)If we become the Democratic Socialist party in July we can easily lose the presidency. We then also lose hope of another Supreme Court appointment
Therefore we must save the House and try to pick up seats in the Senate. For that we need Bloomberg' s ongoing support. We also need some distance between us and Democratic Socialism and Bernie's ongoing dissing of Democrats
'
The party is going to take a beating because it has miscalculated on Bernie and Our Revolution. They will not play by the rules and will try to tear down and intimidate. Their aim is destruction and plunder.
There will be a massive battle at the convention. But the best thing is to not further give in. We have to win this battle before the Putin/Republican battle.

(315 posts)I have consistently voted Democratic, although often (this includes Bill Clinton) while holding my nose because I viewed their policies as damaging to working people. Just as unions (as they get larger) often betray the interests of their members to preserve the union itself, so has the Democratic establishment at times betrayed the interests of working Democrats. There is a lot of offense taken when the Democratic establishment should be asking itself why Sanders and Warren have done so well with small individual donations.

"As you may have noticed lately, the establishment is getting a little nervous. 'Oh my god, they're putting together a multi-generational, multi-racial movement of millions of people!'" Sanders told the crowd at the "get out to caucus" event. "'Oh my goodness, how can we stop them? How can we stop the workers who want higher wages? How can we stop the young people who want to go to college and not come out with debt? How can we stop the millions of people who understand that healthcare is a human right?'"
"So they're getting nervous," Sanders added. "But you know what? When we stand up together, they ain't gonna stop us."
I don't know about you guys but I don't think that comment is out of line or sinister. I read it as any other candidate saying something along the lines of "we're going to win the nomination and our message can't be stopped".
Keep in mind this came after reports of Bloomberg privately pushing for brokered

(4,619 posts)"As the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Max Baucus is at the center of the congressional effort to craft health care reform legislation, a top priority of President Barack Obama. The Baucus-headed Finance Committee has been singled out by advocates and news organizations as the toughest obstacle for the Presidents health care priorities. Containing more moderate and conservative members may not be the only reason. The committee is packed with lawmakers who have close ties to the health care and insurance industries, receiving large campaign contributions as their former staffers turn around to lobby for the very interests whose issues in this case health care they previously worked on. Baucus, as chair, stands out in particular.
Lobbying disclosure filings for the first quarter of 2009 reveal that five of Baucus former staffers currently work for a total of twenty-seven different organizations that are either in the health care or insurance sector or have a noted interest in the outcome. The organizations represented include some of the top lobbying organizations in the health sector: Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Researchers of America (PhRMA), Americas Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), Amgen, and GE Health Care."
https://sunlightfoundation.com/2009/06/22/the-max-baucus-health-care-lobbyist-complex/
Would Baucus be a better senator than a Republican? Absolutely.
Still doesn't make the fact that we only get crumbs when "they" get the steaks any more appealing.
It is a lot more complicated than Democrats versus Republicans.
It is how much influence does corporate america hold over any given politician.
The establishment covers a lot of ground. Does it make our candidates bad, or corrupt? No way. It is because they need 50 million dollars to run for the senate, and the only way for many to get it is from "the establishment" / corporations who just want to make money with the government's help.
It is complicated.
I wish we could openly honestly talk about the real problems. The money controlling everyone in politics in one way or the other, and the people taking the money are not evil, they can't do anything good unless they get elected. Catch 22. I just wish we could talk about the reasons 100 million people don't vote because .......
