The Velveteen Ocelot (108,816 posts)
If Bernie is the nominee, this is what I'll do.
I don't like Bernie. I like him less and less every day, and his latest tweet about fighting the "Democratic establishment" (you know, the people who gave him the chance to run for President and who will be supporting him if he gets the nomination) was the final straw. Nevertheless, if - God help us - he is the nominee, I will fight like a rabid wolverine to get him elected, because Trump.
But the attitude I will have is of a lawyer representing a client, and most definitely not that of a fanatically-devoted Bernie cultist. I practiced law for almost 20 years before going into a different line of work, and during that time I learned how to argue on behalf of clients I didn't like and whose behavior I disapproved of. I usually didn't have the luxury of picking and choosing my clients, so from time to time I represented insurance companies, sexual harassers, age discriminators, drunk drivers, embezzlers and drug dealers. I didn't like them or what they did but I was obligated by the rules of my profession to present the strongest argument possible on their behalf within the limits of the law and legal ethics. I couldn't lie - but I could spin. I learned how to slant the facts without misrepresenting them, and how to argue the law to the client's best advantage. That's pretty much what I'll have to do with Bernie, because I don't like him, I don't like his attitude, I don't like the people who work for him, and I fear that he'll cost us the election. But as a lawyer I learned how to pull all manner of disingenuous and just barely truthful nonsense out of my own butt and I'll do it again. I'll pretend to believe that Bernie will give us all free health care and free college the minute he walks into the Oval Office and I'll spin it hard enough to generate enough electricity to power all of Vermont. I will be like the lawyer who defends a convicted murderer on Death Row - not because she thinks the client is innocent but because she fervently opposes the death penalty. The re-election of Trump is the death penalty. Therefore I will defend Bernie with all the zeal I can muster to try to prevent the death penalty from being imposed on the Democratic Party and the American people, even though I know I will probably fail. (Angry Sandernistas: I'm not equating Bernie with a convicted murderer; I am merely equating his candidacy with that level of desperation). But I hope I can campaign as an ordinary citizen for a candidate I believe in instead of as a cynical defense lawyer for one I don't.

150. I hope not. He did an advertising blitz on cable today
of about 4 different ads about how he's helped black folks get their businesses off the ground. That's nice, but the scale is a lot different when it comes to government and I wonder if he'll raise his own taxes to pay for it, other than the Wall Street transaction tax that we really do need.
In any case, I hope not. I will, however, vote for a flat tire, a broken toaster, a dead ficus plant or a root canal without anesthesia to get rid of this present dumpster fire of a president. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

105. Warren is my top choice, but clearly she's not getting the nomination.
The closest person to her policies is Bernie, which leaves him as the best option. I'm not a fan of some of his populist style rhetoric, but then I also understand lots of people on both sides of the aisle are tired of the status quo and the career politicians who keep protecting corporations and donors at the expense of everyone else. So I can see why Bernie's anti-establishment rhetoric resonates. It worked for Trump, and seems to be working for Bernie.
Maybe the only way to beat a right-wing populist is with a left-wing populist? No Moderate/Centrist has won the GE this century. I'm not sure that's the best option to beat Trump, but what do I know. I just want Trump gone and I don't care how it's achieved. If Bernie can get the 50% that didn't vote in 2016 to vote this time, maybe things will change. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

medicare for all, help repay college debts. free community college for all, etc. What E. Warren tried to copy him and had her

I believe firmly that Universal Healthcare for all, mandatory, with private insurance companies existing only yo offer luxury packages, is the way we need to go. We are not ever going to get there in a single step. But eventually. Or we are doomed. How to get there is a totally different story. But every place on earth that has it - which is nearly every place on earth, it works far better than what we have. That's pretty much how I feel about Warren as my senator. We need to win the popular vote by a lot also, not just the electoral college. Voting a write-in is the same as voting Trump. That was true in 2016 and will be true in 2020. Plus it’s against DU rules to state you won’t vote for the nominee.

15. Exactly. I was on enough debate teams arguing sides I didn't agree with that I can eventually
find arguments in favor of voting for Sanders, beyond the most obvious, that he's the lesser of two evils when our opponent is Trump.
It might take me a while. And I'll need to tailor the arguments to the target. There are people who'll need to be reassured that Sanders will have legislative guardrails on him so he can't do too much damage if he's elected. There are people who'll need to be reminded that even though Sanders was saying and doing some very foolish things in his 30s and 40s, some people just take extra time to grow up, and most of us said plenty of foolish things before we grew up. I just hope that if Sanders is the nominee he'll choose someone like Klobuchar as his running mate. I'm not sure what I'll say if I have to try to explain that if a President Sanders can't serve a full term, we'll be in good hands with a President Tulsi Gabbard, or Nina Turner, or David Sirota. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

This, pretty much, word for word, describes how I feel about a Senator Bernie Sanders nomination. I prefer Joe Biden, but I could definitely live with Klobuchar, Warren, Buttigieg, and even Steyer. I could even adjust to Bloomberg, though that would be tough. The reason that I could handle all of them was that I would feel that they each would have some chance of winning--of beating Donald Trump. There is no way a Socialist is getting into the White House in 2020, short of Donald Trump going on a shooting rampage in an elementary school while he snorts coke with cameras recording it.

Which may mean that the other candidates support is so weak and so unenthusiastic that they wouldn't even come out for the primary and you think they will come out in the general under your type of analysis. Actually, Bernie getting support in these states means that Democrats like him despite the people on this site assuming that somewhere between all and a majority of people mirror their opinions on policy and the electorate.
Bernie has been a very popular national figure since 2016 when he went from a popular senator amongst almost all liberal democrats but little known recognition in the general population. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

75. If Bernie is the nominee I plan on following Bernie's actions and . . .
Leave the Democratic Party.
I was an undefeated championship debator and loved debating both sides. Lots of fun that was a game. I have seen up close how populists destroy confidence in government by over promising and under delivering. I have seen how governments are destroyed by massive debt and cynicism becomes the order of the day. I have seen how unrealistic populist schemes bankrupt the poor and the suicides that follow. Fifty years I have fought for the Obama wing of the party with sensible achievable and sustainable change that builds confidence in government. I will continue to work for individual candidates but the complete and utter destruction of a Republican landslide by a crook like Nixon was a once in a lifetime experience and I will not be hanging around for McGovern 2.0. What makes this 100 times more aggravating than McGovern is we saw what happens when the US population is frightened by economic authoritarianism, they will vote for a crook first, but we had to take McGovern after Bobby was shot, in this case we have a dozen competent alternatives including Senator Warren who has made strong economic reform the mainstay of her campaign The inability of the country to not choose Hillary over Trump will not be understood in the future and simply labeled political sexism at the highest level. Anyone choosing the wild Sanders over the realistic, competent and progressive Warren is simply doing the same. As an independent I will vote against Trump but not for Sanders. As a student of history I will witness the self destruction of the Democratic Party by nominating someone who has an active hatred for the party to lead it with detached objectivity. As the US slides into despotic rule I will acknowledge how wrong I was. I always thought it would be the result of a radical religious movement and not by the antics of an illiterate carnival barker who aspired to become another Hugh Heffner. By the way I loved him as a Senator. That angry voice had a use. Bernie Sanders, the man who wanted to primary Obama will never unite the Democratic Party. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

158. As a student of history, you know we are becoming what we fought.
This wave of dysfunctional populism is an echo of the "communism" the U.S. preoccupied itself with fighting, during decades when our energy would have been better spent on internal improvement.

87. That's the dilemma. If someone like Biden or Buttigieg is nominated
the Bernie cult - the entitled white boys cosplaying Che Guevara and the elderly Marxists who've never recovered from their SWP meetings in the '60s - will stay home wallowing in their delusions of ideological superiority and nursing their snit. If Bernie is nominated, the cult will be out in force trying to browbeat and troll everybody else, but will the people who have been "establishment" Democrats all their lives respond positively to being told that the establishment sucks and vote for him despite his disdain for them and the other "establishment" people - JFK, Obama, Hillary - they've always respected so much?

134. My Concern is War and More War
My concern is War and More War. We have wasted trillions on wars abroad and military bases. I am supporting Warren and Sanders because I know they see the wasted money and the suffering of struggling families. They get that our military budget is bloated. War and the military budget is the elephant in our Livingroom and why we can’t have nice things, or so we are told. Losing a family member in Vietnam for a lie taught me a lot.

146. Bernie has said all along that no one person can accomplish all that he proposes....
he needs millions of people to help him, it's the only way big things get done---from the bottom up, not top down. I think those are his very words. He, nor any other person. I am for him because if you ask for a lot, you get something. If you ask for a piddly little, you get nothing. We expect a lot of our children, we expect a lot of our country and we expect a lot of our presidents, but we have to help. Something like what John Kennedy would say.
I had a hard time voting for Hillary and I thank everyone who will do the same for Bernie, and for the country, for that matter. I know how hard it is. We can help Bernie win over that horror that is in the White House. Vote, Vote, Vote Blue, no matter who. I've listened to Bernie from before the 2016 election on the Thom Hartmann Program, enduring the blatant avoidance of even his name mentioned on tv in both campaigns. He answered questions from all comers for an hour every week for about 10 years----that's why he is so good at debates. He is a good and decent man besides. He's tRump's worst fear, that's why he made it look like Biden was his nemesis. I have faith in him. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

I'll pretend to believe that Bernie will give us all free health care and free college the minute he walks into the Oval Office and I'll spin it hard enough to generate enough electricity to power all of Vermont. Not even the kids think Bernie will get them free tuition the minute he walks into the Oval Office. I'm a teacher and I know this firsthand from students. Everyone knows it's a process. 164. I was making a point using a bit of hyperbole,
which is also a standard method of rhetoric. However, it is also true that there are plenty of people out there who are completely ignorant about how our government works and who therefore really do believe that a president can implement his policies all by himself without the involvement of Congress. Many people don't understand that it's a long, complex process and that it might fail completely, which is why candidates get away with making promises they can't keep.
