Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumChris Matthews: Democratic Establishment Would Prefer Trump to Bernie Sanders
During mid-afternoon coverage of the Nevada caucus, the MSNBC host suggested Democratic Party elites would prefer to see President Donald Trump beat Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the 2020 frontrunner who overwhelmed his competition with a blowout win in Saturdays contest.
Im wondering if the Democratic moderates want Bernie Sanders to be President? Matthews asked out loud during a discussion with Politicos Elena Schneider. I mean, thats maybe too exciting a question to raisethey dont like Trump at all. Do they want Bernie Sanders to take over the Democratic Party in perpetuity?
Another on-air guest essayed a Well but he was quickly cut-off by the loud-speaking Hardball host.
I mean, he takes it over, he sets the direction of the future of the party, Matthews continued. Maybe theyd rather wait four years and put in the Democrat that they like.
Matthews, not quite finished, later compared Sanders crushing victory in Nevadaand prospect of winning the nominationto the fall of the French army at the Maginot Line during World War II. Or, in simpler termshe compared the Jewish presidential candidates win to the triumph of Nazism over the Third French Republic.

(761 posts)by trump, if i didn't feel that our very democracy was at stake. And before you jump all over me, Sanders folks, I'll vote and donate to him. But he's going to get destroyed if he's the nominee. Likely costs us the house for 2 years, likely solidifies the court in conservative hands for 20 years, and gives carte blanche to this regime for 2 more years. I hope I'm wrong.

(57 posts)He may win the nomination and lose the election just like Clinton, we won't know until it happens. I hope we win not to be able to say those who supported Sanders in 2016 were right this whole time, but so we can move closer to the goals of his policy proposals, replace RBG with a liberal justice, etc etc

(761 posts)I hope I'm wrong. But the blue wave that rose from the ashes of 2016 was carried on the backs of moderate candidates in swing districts, not socialists, democratic or otherwise. Go ask conor lamb, abigail spanberger, or even mark Kelly who they'd like at the top of the ticket. This isn't just me talking out of my rear end.

(3,363 posts)Bernie is dominating the youth vote by massive margins. They were the largest voting block in 2018, and millions and millions more have reached 18 since then. He's by far the top choice among Hispanics, which make up a sizable portion of the electorate, especially in states like Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas, New Mexico, Florida, etc. Polling shows him beating Trump by 18 among independents. He does quite well with African Americans, maybe not #1 yet, but I believe he's #2. He's the only candidate who has been able to outreach with non-typical Democratic voters. Biden told a more conservative voter to go vote for Trump. Bernie hired him on his campaign.
And nobody in the race is filling stadiums with tens of thousands of people or generating the enthusiasm we saw with Obama like Bernie is.
Maybe it requires a populist to beat another populist. No Centrist has won the General election this century. We tried the Biden/Klobuchar/Buttigieg approach numerous times in recent elections, and they all failed. Maybe we should try something different?

(761 posts)And before you use the example of 2016 being "the moderate way" failing, remember she got screwed by Sanders, comey, the FBI in NY, and of course Russia, and still got 3 million more votes while losing by 80k combined in 3 states. Poor example. Kerry? Fine. Gore? Robbed.

(3,363 posts)were dominated by Socialist policies. FDR's New Deal was viewed as Socialist and akin to something out of the Soviet Union.
Bernie actually polls better as a Socialist than he does as a Democrat.

(12,011 posts)I wasn't alive in 1972, but as a poly sci major I studied all of the elections since FDR fairly extensively, and from what I recall, one of the reasons McGovern lost so big was that much of the party establishment went through the motions of supporting him but sat on their hands and let him fall, especially when it looked like he was going to lose. I'm worried about a similar phenomenon if Bernie gets the nomination.

(57 posts)Place Trump as Nixon and Sanders as McGovern and there you go. There are a ton of differences from 1972 to 2020, almost fifty years later. The networks do not have a fraction of the dominant influence they had, i'm paraphrasing from msnbc earlier today, but they referenced Lyndon B. Johnson saying he lost after Walter Cronkite stopped supporting him. Sanders doesn't necessarily need the support of the democratic establishment to win, or at least their enthusiastic support. With the grassroots organizing and consistent donations from his supporters he may be able to make up that party deficit.

(12,011 posts)I understand what you are saying, but I disagree that the Democratic establishment doesn't matter. Even if Bernie can win without establishment support, which is questionable, he'll still need support from the establishment to pass any of his agenda. He's being short-sighted pissing everyone off.
