Bernie Sanders: Guns In Vermont Are Not The Same As Guns In Chicago Or Los Angeles

Given Bernie's success in making right wing ideas sound progressive, perhaps he can run in California with the following quote. In 2016, the more racist Trump got, the more Trump would win. This time around, the more Bernie runs against core Democratic principles like a free media or gun control, the more he will win.

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2015/07/07/sanders_guns_in_vermont_are_not_the_same_as_guns_in_chicago.html

BERNIE SANDERS, VERMONT SENATOR: I come from a state where there is virtually no gun control. But the people of my state understand, pretty clearly, that guns in Vermont are not the same thing as guns in Chicago or Los Angeles. In our state, guns are used for hunting. In Chicago they are used for kids killing other kids or gang members shooting at police officers, shooting down innocent people. We need a sensible debate about gun control, which overcomes the cultural divide that exists in this country, and I think I can play an important role in this.

to people living in Chicago and Los Angeles and a hell of a lot of other places, that sounds like white privilege babble (at best -- I'm being VERY gentle here).

Prinicples.

Safety
When we are in the White House, we will move aggressively to end the epidemic of gun violence in this country and pass the common sense gun safety legislation that the overwhelming majority of Americans want.

Key Points
Take on the NRA and its corrupting effect on Washington.
Expand background checks.
End the gun show loophole. All gun purchases should be subject to the same background check standards.
Ban the sale and distribution of assault weapons.
Ban high-cap magazines
Implement buyback programs for AW
Support red flag laws
Ban 3d printing of firearms
Crackdown on straw purchases

Sort of makes this a non-issue (unless u do not agree with these principles)

A lot of guns used in Chicago crimes are purchased in Indiana. They have far laxer guns laws than Illinois does.

Additionally, people in Illinois also hunt. I hate the thought, but have family members who think it's wonderful.

14. Joe's deflecting from his failure to get any gun control laws passed after SandyHook.

Obama put him in charge of gun control legislation and he failed. Joe says only he can get things done in Congress, but I'm not so sure.

https://www.politico.com/story/2015/10/joe-biden-gun-control-effort-sandy-hook-214644

Six weeks after their reelection, the president put Joe Biden in charge of the most serious push for gun control in decades, sparked by the massacre of children at Sandy Hook Elementary. It seemed like the moment when national outrage might lead to congressional action.

Biden did not deliver.

Four months after Biden took on the mission, a modest measure to require expanded background checks died on the Senate floor.

POLITICO interviews with more than a dozen people involved in the effort show that Biden made several strategic missteps that delayed action and may have sacrificed the emotional pull that offered a chance to break a historic logjam. He urged grieving families who wanted to take their case to Capitol Hill to go home, trying to protect them from difficult conversations.

The gun controllers are a very fanatical and loud faction of the Democratic party, particularly in large cities where it really does not make sense to have large capacity high-powered firearms. OTOH in a lot of the country, lots of people have these same weapons with no trauma or drama.

Not getting into the details of my opinions, but I am damned sure that the STRIDENT hatred of firearms that wins plaudits here on DU and in New York or Chicago is not the norm, even for Democrats, in lots of the country.
