Democratic Primaries

Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Saturday made his most explicit case yet that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) would be unable to beat President Trump, just hours after Sanders vaulted ahead of his rivals in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Buttigieg, who had spent more time in Nevada than all but a handful of the other candidates, used his concession speech to warn against a "rush to nominate Sen. Sanders," casting him as a disaster in waiting for Democrats up and down the ballot.
"I believe the only way to truly deliver any of the progressive changes we care about is to be a nominee who actually gives a damn about the effect you are having, from the top of the ticket, on those crucial, front-line House and Senate Democrats running to win, who we need to win, to make sure our agenda is more than just words on a page," Buttigieg said.
"Sen. Sanders, on the other hand, is ignoring, dismissing, or even attacking the very Democrats we absolutely must send to Capitol Hill in order to keep Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, in order to support judges who respect privacy and democracy, and in order to send Mitch McConnell into retirement. Lets listen to what those voices are telling us," he said.

The more of these supporters get cocky, just mind the massive ego of their candidate, the more they reflect trump supporters.

(24,122 posts)And THAT'S how President Sanders will distinguish himself from tRumpy The Clown, a gameshow host who is the EASIEST candidate to beat that RepukelicKKKers have ever put up. Bernie will demolish that POS!! That is, unless Bernie decides to blow off campaigning in all 50 states, which I highly doubt... no doubt, Joe will also dive in and support Bernie's presidential campaign wholeheartedly, with the same kind of enthusiasm Bernie showed for Hillary in the last general election (with 40+ campaign appearances on her behalf)

(15 posts)He won't micromanage the down ballot candidates. He plans to let them run their campaigns as they see fit even if it means distancing themselves from him. He has enough self-awareness to know that's the winning strategy.

(33,643 posts)Its just that it's really not that simple in actual execution.
In largest sense, it doesn't get around the issue of people who decide to not show up to the polls at all cause they're not inspired by the top of the ticket. That happens A LOT.

(15 posts)But in 2018 we didn't have anyone at the top of the ticket and we picked up a lot of seats. Is it possible the entire election paradigm has changed and the old rules don't apply anymore? I can't see someone not voting to pick up a Senate seat just because they don't like the presidential candidate. Also, aren't there ballot initiatives that people will turn out for regardless of the candidate?

(5,381 posts)The new motto of moderate democrats is if you vote for Bernie even if your conscience, heart and soul are telling you to support him you are failing the democratic party, the United States and the entire planet. Somehow the ethics changed when I wasn't looking.

(806 posts)candidate after losing one of the primaries directly attacking the winner by name (I didn't listen to every single word of their speeches - but I'm 99% sure Biden and Klobuchar didn't do this last night, and I doubt Warren - whose speech I didn't watch - did or I would have heard about it by now) - most candidates are advised that doing so simply comes off as ungracious - they simply congratulate the winner and make the case for themselves going forward.
