Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWe desperately need a brokered convention...
I just do not see how we unite the party otherwise. A brokered convention will force the nominee to pick someone from the other side of the party as the VP candidate.
If Sanders is the nominee and he picks Nina Turner or Tulsi Gabbard, we will be killed in a GE due to turnout
If Biden is the nominee and he picks Bloomberg, we will be killed in the GE due to turnout
The only way forward is a unity ticket between the moderates and the left wing of the party

(38,958 posts)but don't see a brokered convention as all that bad a thing. One upside is that Trump won't know who he is running against until the last minute making life just a little bit harder for him and his playmates.

(5,931 posts)I don't know that a brokered convention is the best way to achieve that, but all candidates please take note: without a unity ticket, your campaign is likely to fall short of victory.
And there's just too much at stake.

(13,058 posts)I don't think it's likely. There is a reason why we haven't had a brokered convention since 1952. I think there are two likely scenarios. Either Bernie gets 50% +1 or he gets close enough to a majority that he is able to negotiate for support from one or more of the other candidates that will be enough to put him over the top. Perhaps Senator Warren or Mayor Pete could be persuaded to throw their support to Bernie in exchange for the VP nomination.

(945 posts)Delegates are only pledged to their initial candidate. In your scenario, there would be no compulsion for Warren or Pete's delegates to vote for Sanders. The nominee needs 1990 delegates on the first ballot. So there would have to be accounting for a percentage of delegates not switching over to their initial candidate's preferred choice. That is why it is a brokered convention if no one wins on the first round of balloting.

(13,058 posts)Under that scenario release delegates would be free to vote for whomever they want but at least some of them would probably go to Bernie and that might be enough to put him over the top.

(945 posts)If there is one Candidate besides Biden who has enough delegates to put Sanders over the top (accounting for attrition) this works but right now the delegate math is not showing such a candidate.
