Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIf Bernie is the nominee, we can expect months of ads showing shirtless Bernie in 1988,
sitting around a table in Russia with other topless people, singing "This land is your land, this land is my land. . . "
How fun.
The scene starts just after the 1.30 minute mark, but there are other clips all over youtube.

(108,977 posts)described that way. He, unlike many today, understood what socialism is. Socialism does not mean a government taxes people to pay for services. It's about who owns and controls the means of production.

(42,862 posts)It's too late in the game to be suddenly worried about that now. If for some cursed reason he becomes our party's nominee, then it's it's much too fucking late to try an "explain the word" and the election would be lost.
There are simply no two ways about it. Our nation will not elect a Socialist for its president. The GOP will make certain of that.
-- a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
-- policy or practice based on the political and economic theory of socialism.
-- (in Marxist theory) a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of Communism.

(616 posts)We can expect endless articles about how Hunter Biden got his job. It's not that Joe Biden will be accused of doing something illegal necessarily. It will be that most of us unimportant people had to work hard to earn our jobs and so did our kids.

(16,903 posts)The 10-day trip to Yaroslavl was a honeymoon for the Sanders, but the primary purpose was official city business. Burlington was solidifying a sister-city relationship with Yaroslavl, a city about 160 miles northeast of Moscow. Also on the trip were John Franco, a city attorney; Peter Clavelle, the director of Community and Economic Development, who succeeded Sanders as mayor the following year; and Terry Bouricius, a Burlington city councilor.
According to Franco, the event videotaped was a send off party/dinner sponsored by officials in Yaroslavl on the last night of the trip. It was held, he said, at a spa where the guests took part in a Russian tradition of going into hot and cold pools after having their backs hit with eucalyptus and birch leaves. The guest then wrapped themselves in sheets before sharing a buffet style dinner and toasts, Franco said, noting Sanders did not drink.

(2,406 posts)That's what I got from that clip. He lived a life and seemed to have fun. Shirtless, drinking vodka (or whatever), having fun -- in his 40s! Lucky guy.
I don't want Sanders as the nominee, but stuff like this isn't going to stop him. And I speak as one who is probably well to the right of most DUers (an example: I gave $50 to Jim Webb in the 2016 primary).
Sanders does have to show that he's an American patriot and will be a trustworthy steward for the men and women of the US armed forces, in the role of commander in chief. He hasn't done that, in my opinion. But this clip and his Soviet honeymoon doesn't rule him out.

Show this to a millennial and see what their reaction is.

(7,609 posts)will spend to try and discredit Bernie? It will come down to a question of "what do you want?" 4 more years of the biggest liar in American history or changing the way this country works for the first time since FDR. Should be an easy choice but we all know how effective marketing is - for those with little conviction they will begin to doubt themselves as the GOP does their typical hatchet job on their rivals. It reminds me of the Ann Richards smear campaign in Texas or maybe the John Kerry smears. Of course there are many, many other examples.
