Bernie Sanders barnstormed across Texas over the weekend, holding rallies in El Paso, San Antonio, Houston and culminating Sunday evening in Austin, celebrating his commanding victory in Saturdays Nevada caucuses as a harbinger of whats to come in Texas and beyond on Super Tuesday on March 3.
My God there are a lot of people here tonight, Sanders said gazing out at the vast throng assembled at Vic Mathias Shores, which the campaign estimated at 12,700. I cannot believe how many people there are here. Its amazing.
This is the most consequential election in the modern history of our country, Sanders declared, saying that the outpouring of support in his four weekend rallies affirmed his confidence that, We are going to win and win big in Texas.
We are not going to have Trump for another term, Sanders said.
The pundits tell us Texas is conservative state. I dont believe that for a minute, said Sanders, who said Texas will emerge from 2020 as one of the most progressive states in the nation.

(713 posts)The Urban Vote, the Youth Vote, the Latino Vote, etc. may well help turn Texas from a red state into at least a purple one. Demographics are changing, and it favors Democrats, I think. Cities like Houston are vibrant and diverse and are representative of a new Texas. So, I think that Bernie is smart to put a lot of effort into Texas. It is about mobilizing the vote. If we turn out more than they do, we could have a Democratic victory in Texas in November.

(112,107 posts)for any Democrat this century. When Wendy Davis ran for governor in 2014 she only received 38.9% of the votes. Four years later, Beto received 48.3% of the vote against an incumbent senator and Cruz had to spend a small fortune to hold onto his seat.
I would say that closing the Democratic vs. Republican gap in off-year elections by nearly ten points is an impressive feat. Let's see if Bernie can get 48.3% of the vote in the primary or the general election if he is fortunate enough to be nominated.

(10,721 posts)Every single major racial and ethnic group had the largest increase in turnout from one midterm to the next (in this case, 2014 to 2018) in US history. And the age group that increased turnout the most from 2014 to 2018 was the 18-29 age group.
