In 1844, the Democrats were split

The three nominees for the Presidential candidate
Were Martin Van Buren, a former President
And an a... boli... tionist
James Buchanan, a mo... derate
Lewis Cass a gen'ral and expaaaaan... sioniiiiiiiiiiiiiist

From Nashville came a dark horse riding up
He was James K. Polk, Napoleon of the stump

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

And not a well known candidate, either. A major slogan for the Whigs was "Who The Hell is James Knox Polk?"

Really, if he hadn't been running against three-time loser Henry Clay, who was still being tarred with the unwarranted "corrupt bargain" that put J.Q. Adams in the White House instead of Jackson in 1828, he probably would have gone down to defeat.

The Democrats don't always do so well with Dark Horses.
