If you can watch that video, posted below, and still vote for him, you and I have completely different views on what being liberal is about.

(36,294 posts)"The charity run by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is giving the state of Michigan $10 million to address the opioid crisis.
Billionaire philanthropist Bloomberg appeared Thursday with Governor Gretchen Whitmer at the City of Eastpointe Fire Department near Detroit. Firefighters there told them they save more people from drug overdoses than from burning buildings.
The $10 million gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies is a piece of its $50 million nationwide initiative, which will fund drug intervention efforts in 10 states in the next three years."

(18,573 posts)Just for perspective, if a person making the 2018 nominal median income of $33,706 (per the Federal Reserve) gave a proportional donation it would equal about $5.62.
While I'm sure Michigan was pleased to receive the donation and will overlook the callous remarks on OD deaths, Bloomberg literally gave his pocket change.

(36,294 posts)Are you going by Bloomberg's income for the year 2019 or his total wealth?

(18,573 posts)I did not look up Bloomberg's income but used his wealth to calculate the ratio. In my defense however, many people around the median income range have a wealth that is equal to, if not less, than their income.
I don't dispute that his donation is exponentially greater than what I give in remembrance of a relative, but my pittance makes me dig deeper than his $10M.

(36,294 posts)But I can't say my situation is the norm as I acquired and paid for my assets in full (two homes and a shop) before I ended up on disability almost 10 years ago.
While Bloomberg's donation may seem like a pittance to you, it's the equivalent of almost 2 million people donating the $5 something you mentioned and a great benefit to the recipient.

(36,294 posts)"1 Mike Bloomberg equals 660,000 American households, wealthwise
The media mogul made an estimated $3.5 billion last year in income alone from Bloomberg LP, the financial data and news company he founded in 1981 to serve Wall Street banking and trading clients. That's more than 56,000 times the median annual U.S. household income of nearly $62,000 in 2018, the latest year the number is available.
Mike Bloomberg's estimated total net worth of $64 billion equals the total net worth of nearly 660,000 American households, based on the latest available median net worth of U.S. households, which was around $97,000 in 2016. (The average American household's net worth is much higher, but it's skewed upward by the super-rich, like, well, Mike Bloomberg.)"

Since Bloomberg donated $50 million to fight the opoid crisis, using the above numbers (wealth), 660,000 households would have to donate $75.75 each.
