He explicitly stated that he condemned the human rights violations, after pointing out some of the reasons that Castro had some support in his country from things like that literacy program. The point he seems to be making here is that Cuban communism was not monolithic.

This is nowhere near the endorsement of Castro that people are making it out to be.

...in both the state legislature and Congress, those comments don't sit well.

Remember when he made those statements, at a time when Castro was still imprisoning journalists and dissidents and conducting mass executions. In the 1980s he made nary a peep about "human rights"!

Someone praising a murderous dictator is a "perfect candidate"? BTW, Castro isn't the only despot for whom Sanders has extolled their virtues.

What you are suggesting would mean all leaders everywhere have always been bad. It is not a defense to point out some not-evil things done by a person who did some evil things. He directly condemned the imprisonment of dissidents in this video, for example.

this would have been a bad way to do it. I don't think he is wrong here. There are many, many brutal things that have happened from US foreign policy. It doesn't make me think that the US is an evil country, on balance. It doesn't make me think all its leaders have been evil.

As former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau tweeted out this morning, Pres Obama made similar arguments about the literacy and healthcare advances made in Cuba post-revolution and the world didn't end.

The difference is that Pres Obama spent much longer talking about human rights violations, etc and really clobbered Castro--in Cuba--after noting the "good things" Castro had done.

He also didn't say Castro "took office," which is a terrible euphemism for a bloody revolution in which you round up and execute your political enemies.
