Ava Duvernay is one of the most celebrated Black creatives of our time, but over the weekend the award-winning director found herself in the crosshairs of overzealous Bernie Sanders supporters who took issue with her for critiquing their candidate.
Friday evening, the Vermont Senator tweeted out, Ive got news for the Republican establishment. Ive got news for the Democratic establishment. They cant stop us.
"Im undecided. But I know this isnt what I want, she wrote in response to Sanders tweet Saturday.
Ava what is it that you want then? A little surprised with your tweet. Since I have always seen you as a progressive woman, wrote one woman to which the filmmaker responded, So youre saying if I disagree with his statement that Im not a progressive woman? Is that what youve just written here?
People on here getting emotional about one man without keeping their eye on the real ball, she elaborated, then added, I understand exactly what hes saying here and I dont agree with it. He cant win that way. And he surely cannot govern that way. Hows he gonna get anything passed? Hows he gonna move anything forward? However, once the discussion became ugly and violent, DuVernay tapped out, posting, Bernie supporters terrorizing my mentions while Im off enjoying my Saturday.

(6,537 posts)Gotta wonder who is real or not when online these days. I avoid twitter like the plague is it and use the FB block feature often. If I see some asshole spouting off, I check his page. Many times they look suspicious, and if so, I call them Russians in one way or another. Most of the time, they disappear. If not, or if they appear to be simply nut jobs, of whatever affiliation, they are blocked. No one needs those sorts of threats in their life. I feel sorry for this woman.

(6,537 posts)and, IMO, almost nothing of substance can be boiled down to a tweet.
The GOP has won its war on education and intelligence. Didn't even have to destroy books or professors to do so. A whole generation or two of people have willingly handed over their interest in learning and thinking. My parents and their parents all wanted a better life and better education than they had. That ethic seems to have been systematically destroyed

(63,172 posts)Because if he sits on his hands, relying on the goodwill of the electorate that he's working so hard to alienate, he's going to be in for a heck of a shock when people interpret a tepid non-response as tacit endorsement.
I'd like to hear his firm and explicit disavowal of these purportedly false supporters. Or are there "good people on both sides?"

(6,537 posts)but there are still alot of them, and far more than I see from any other campaign. I've never been attacked by anyone from any other campaign. This time, or in 2016. Always pro-Bernie, whether they are legit people I know, or unknowns that I simply ignore

Sincerely hope that sick Jacobite is actually a starving Russian posting for his overlord, the Thief of all the Russias, who simply must be shirtless
& seriously whoever that fool was, way to be thin skinned in the face of a critique.
Perhaps if Bernie, his own dang self, stopped creating "the alternative fact" that the GOP enablers and the Democratic resistance are equivalent, democrats everywhere would be more receptive to his message.
Agree Bernie's supporters should not be ignored. That does not mean they get to verbally kick the rest of us in the face.
We are in this together, or surely the parasite GOP will stay in power.

(628 posts)And worse some in the press think this is a good thing for the coming struggle.
Here is the thing, though.
Barack Obama's support is (& was) wide, deep and stable. It remained so without the need to villify or ridicule allies.
Bernie's support & even his campaign alienates friends. One of his top staffers claimed "birtherism!" in response to a medical records question. That is absurd.
Bernie's supporters need a thicker skin. The candidate needs to move into the 21st century. Then, Senator Sanders would have a chance to unite us all.

(13,865 posts)My wife had one for Warren.
We have both just about decided to vote for Sanders in the SC primary this weekend.
For me, posts like this have helped push me in that direction. The sheer hysteria and paranoia of the Never Bernies, as evidenced by serious claims that those posts were death threats, are bullshit.
We are also fed up with the completely unfounded assertions that Bernie cant beat Trump, when most polls show him with the largest lead of any other Dem candidate. While Bernie continues to accrue delegates, supporters and money, Biden and Warren have been consistently underperforming for the past month.

(3,321 posts)Better learn to live with Bernie folks, he just might be your nominee.
You have exactly two alternatives at that point.
Do everything in your power to make sure he gets elected, or -
give up in despair and accept another four years of Donald John Trump as POTUS.
Your choice.
I made my choice when he announced his candidacy. I will give up my life, if need be, to ensure his defeat and I ain't talking about Bernie.

(3,635 posts)where they can't pretend to be 'democratic' socialists or whatever they like to spin.
their pathological jealousy of the rich, which is overblown considering most of them are middle class first worlders (courtesy of capitalism, which gives them computers, videogames, twitter, etc where they can play 'revolutionary'), imo has more todo with entitlement and narcissism than any 'real' need.
it also shows how clueless they are about race/gender/etc - which has for hundreds of years been the true oppression. being wealthy never saved blacks or jews or women or gays from being relegated to second class citizens, violence, genocide, etc.
