Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumQuestions about what to do Super Tuesday
I'm in one of those states. I am in a quandary about what to do with my primary vote.
As you can see below, Warren is my candidate of choice. I think she is the smartest and most capable of those running. I would prefer her to any of the other Democratic candidates. But, of course, I would prefer any of the other Democratic candidates to trump.
That said, I believe that nominating Sanders is a guaranteed trump win in November. So on Super Tuesday how do I cast my ballot. As it stands the moderate wing of the party holds a majority of support, but when you divide that by four or five, with only two progressives splitting the other side, Sanders benefits.
Polls show Biden leading by the most in the states that will matter electorally in November. But even if I ignore my sentiments and progressive wishes and vote for Biden in the primary, Sanders just gets more of the progressive vote, and with the moderates split by four or five, stands to move to an invincible number even if he doesn't really have the majority of the party supporting him.
So do I vote Warren or not? I am 50 years into voting progressive, but this year is different. My problem is the the Democratic candidates are not working to defeat trump, but to attack each other which only helps trump.

(7,862 posts)...but I am not any longer. I care more about NOT nominating Sanders than I do nominating any one in particular of the other candidates, which is one of the reasons I switched from Warren to Biden. Based on Warren's relatively poor showings thus far, I just don't think it is in the cards for her. And -- if you likewise don't want Sanders to win -- I think a vote for her may eventually turn into delegate support for Sanders in the event he doesn't win the nomination on the first ballot. I just don't really see any reason to vote for Warren now at this point, especially not if one of your main concerns is keeping Sanders from the nomination.

(32,685 posts)I vowed to support EW no matter what because she was the first senator to call for impeachment... but I'm terrified by the thought of another 4 years of trump!

(7,862 posts)Fun fact: I believe Warren's strong and unequivocal call for impeachment was what originally got me to switch my support to her earlier in the race.

(2,041 posts)Im in California, where last I saw, Liz was a few points behind Bernie and they had over 50% between them. Id like to see her take our delegates.
ETA: I just checked and thats not true anymore. Im voting for her anyway 😛

(68 posts)We need to stand by our candidates here.
Fortune telling, game theory, and prognosticating is crazy-making and gets us nowhere (see 2000, 2004, and 2016).
Vote for your candidate of choice in the primary! This is our chance at making the party ours! Don't sacrifice your vote on thumb twiddling and calculations... Warren is obviously the best candidate

(525 posts)Two reasons.
First, I like Warren. She's awesome.
Second, she's got a decent shot. If she gets a bump from the last debate - and the next one, she could easily end up with the second most delegates after Super Tuesday - resulting in a decent chance of emerging as the Sanders alternative.
She's not that far behind Bloomberg & Biden. Doesn't take much to put her in second.
I think your quandry would be much more difficult in the states that vote AFTER Super Tuesday.
Now, my picture below shows Sanders. But I'm not telling you to vote for him. Vote for who you like in the primary. All good! =D

This is precisely why we get along
Someone on YouTube was complaining about Warren not 'attacking' Bernie instead of Bloomberg and my defense for Warren fell on exactly this concept: Warren supporters like Bernie and Sanders supporters like Warren... We just need to see how things go and work it out together. Unlike the moderates, the Sanders/Warren coalition seems to actually have a unified front against the right. We'll get it done.

(6,137 posts)Ive already voted but had I waited, Id vote for Biden today in CA. Every vote matters in dem primary cause delegates are proportionate and thresholds to earn delegates can be razor thin.

(22,061 posts)Can't remember which show, as I was trying not to fall asleep. This person said, tons of people will not vote in the primaries. They take the attitude that--you people decide who the nominee is going to be, and we'll vote for them in Nov. Blue, no matter who.
To me, that says, the people who are voting in the primaries are only the tip of the iceberg. And that trump is going to get steamrolled by whoever we nominate.
What a happy thought!
