Tue Feb 25, 2020, 09:08 AM
Feb 2020

He sure considers that to be relevant to his civil rights cred... along with endorsing Jesse Jackson for a POTUS run in 1988...

And while Sanders is quick to bring up his 1988 defeat, he rarely mentions his 1990 win, which came with help from the NRA. Soon after Smith took office, the freshman Republican reversed himself and sponsored a bill banning assault weapons. Vermont gun groups were apoplectic and called for his resignation. Throughout the 1990 campaign, Sanders deftly exploited the rift. Though he, too, supported an assault weapons ban, he promised hunters he would always be straight with them. That fall, the NRA spent between $18,000 and $20,000 on anti-Smith ads. “Bernie Sanders is a more honorable choice for Vermont sportsmen than Peter Smith,” NRA executive Wayne LaPierre wrote his members.

Sanders won the race and kept his promise. He was an occasional ally to the NRA, repeatedly voting against the Brady Bill, which mandated waiting periods and background checks; opposing funding for gun violence research; and voting to protect gun manufacturers and retailers from lawsuits.

He also honored his commitment, in 1994, to vote for an assault weapons ban. But as the frequency and severity of mass shootings increased over the next two decades, Sanders continued to maintain that the federal government ought to avoid regulating firearms. “In my view, decisions about gun control should be made as close to home as possible — at the state level,” he said after a July 2012 shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

In my interview with Sanders after the Sandy Hook shooting, he said it was “more important” to address mental health than the availability of firearms, adding, “This is not one of my major issues.”

In 1998 Sanders voted in favor of the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, which said: "It should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime."

Later that same year, Sanders also backed a resolution that stated: "Congress reaffirms that it should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime."

Sanders also voted for the 2001 Authorization Unilateral Military Force Against Terrorists (AUMF), which pretty much allowed Bush to wage war wherever he wanted.

Authorization for Use of Military Force - Authorizes the President to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations, or persons.
States that this Act is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of the War Powers Resolution.

(I've never been able to get the sound back on DU again). I thought it meant, he's running for the Senate, because if he's the presidential nominee, Dems have a better chance at re-taking the Senate.

The man is still sharp as a tack. I can't believe he would have forgotten what year it is, or what he's running for, when he can reel off statistics at the drop of a hat.

I assume he is talking about Jill. Kind of a lame dad joke but i don't think that's a concern. As for "running for Senate" he's been running for Senate much of his adult life so seems like an easy thing to slip up on when you've been giving stump speeches for years.

This is a flat out disgusting take by a Sanders surrogate. He’s not attacking joe on his policies, he’s insinuating based on Joes age and misspeaking, LIKE EVERY HUMAN ON THE PLANET DOES, that he is some how in early stages of dementia. It’s disgusting ageism. So I hope all of you clapping along like trained seals, realize once Bernie misspeaks and he will, it’s coming right back at you. So please when that happens don’t scream the media is bias.

That verifies what Chapman claims? If it's not produced, then it seems as if Joe misspoke, Chapman is lying and the Reuters story is true. Sometimes it's ok to admit to an error. "To err is human". Without proof Chapman is doing Joe no favors here.

Yes, that's exactly right.

The video is not altered, merely edited down to the relevant part, and it is fully accurate.

Click through to the tweet and you can even see the full speech, if you want.

It was a honest mistake. He was talking about the presidency and the US Senate races, he simply misspoke. It was a great stump speech until that point. I loved when he called Lindsey "former Senator". SC make it happen! That would be a gift to all of us.
I don't know why people believe these candidates are super-human. There was no need for Chapman or any Biden supporter to lie about the events that took place. There is equally no need for Sanders and other candidates and their supporters to use this human error to smear Biden. This is petty as heck and does not reflect well on us. Biden is human, next...
