Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumRepublicans already tying downballot Democrats to Sanders
In two separate email blasts by the NRCC, the group questioned if Florida Reps. Donna Shalala (D) and Stephanie Murphy (D) would support a Castro fanboy. Both have disavowed Sanderss comments.
Does this mean Stephanie Murphy will refuse to support Sanders when he is the nominee? Or will she upset her socialist base instead? asked Camille Gallo, a spokeswoman for the NRCC.
A GOP strategist pledged that Republicans would use Sanders as an anchor to pull down Democratic Senate hopefuls.
Right now, Bernie is their front-runner, and socialism doesnt sell in the Atlanta suburbs, in their Charlotte suburbs and in the Phoenix suburbs, the GOP strategist said, referring to the Senate races in Georgia, North Carolina and Arizona.
Sanders, who supports free college education and Medicare for All, is already being name-dropped in key Senate races as Republicans try to activate their base. While most of the 24 Senate seats the GOP is defending are in safe Republican states, a handful of key toss-up races are expected to make or break the GOP efforts to hold onto the majority.
Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), appearing with Trump at a Colorado rally last week, pledged that Republicans would fight socialism.
There was a dangerous thing that happened in 2016. It was the normalization of socialism by Bernie Sanders, he said.
Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) recently called former astronaut Mark Kelly, who is likely to be her Democratic opponent, the the 51st vote for all of Bernies wildest Soviet-style fantasies.
McSally is running for the final two years of the late Sen. John McCains (R) term. Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), has distanced himself from the tag, noting that hes a capitalist.

(9,971 posts)Last week before early voting started in Texas, an NPR guest claimed that Sanders wanted to nationalize the oil industry and exclaimed how bad that would be for the Texas economy. I dont think thats true, at least today, but if Sanders said it years ago, it will be used against everyone now.

(737 posts)Why do you think many republicans (including Trump) would LOVE to see Sanders as the nominee? I'll vote blue no matter what but we just can't "play into their hands"...

(21,303 posts)Max Boot is one man's opinion. Statistics don't back up Boot's opinion. Statistics show Bernie beating Trump.
Show me a poll where Bernie is not beating Trump.

(737 posts)That's not the issue. It's about the mentality of moderate and independent voters in addition to who has the "best chance" of beating him. The top 2 were Biden and Sanders for RIGHT NOW. However, if he keeps "branding" himself as a "socialist" and making comments similar to the one about Castro then he not only hurts his own chances in the General Election but those Dems in the House and Senate as well...

(5,969 posts)Every Dem will be put in a position to declare whether they support the "socialist" and his policies. It will be a lose-lose. Even moderate and popular Dems will have to face the "You may like Democrat x, but we need Repub y to prevent the socialist takeover" attack.

(5,969 posts)We are talking about downballot races. What's so hard to understand about that?
I don't know how it can be explained in a simpler terms but this is not about Bernie vs Trump. Try to at least make the effort and read the posts.

(9,117 posts)more than capturing the White House. It is also controlling Congress and as many state legislatures as possible.
Bernie-philes have clearly forgotten or never learned the painful lessons many of us moderates learned during the Clinton years and again during the Obama years: just having the White House isnt enough. We need control of Congress, too, and thats something I believe that Bernie cant deliver.
We are electing a President, not a talented vocalist for American Idol. A President needs a team in Congress and the Senate.

(42,862 posts)... giving the advantage to Bernie. (This is how it happened for Trump: too many "normal" republicans splitting the "normal" vote... thus allowing the kooky Trump supporters to propel him into the lead.)
The DNC needs tighter qualification criteria to winnow out the field before we get this far. Also, some requirements on disallowing non-Democrats would be good too.

(737 posts)The vote is STILL split up giving Bernie the advantage. And probably not counting the number of folks that 45 and the GOP has ordered to vote for him in these first few primaries (if that's possible of course). Non-Democrats should DEFINITELY not be allowed in order to avoid this predicament that we're in right now...

(9,117 posts)No coat tails.
As many of us learned when Obama was President, holding the White House wouldnt be enough: we need control of Congress and of as many state legislatures as possible. Democrats bedazzled by Bernies candidacy need to face this unpleasant fact. Its painful but its true.
The irony of Bernies candidacy is that his old Socialist Workers buddies understood the role of the party and the candidate better than Bernie and his current followers seem to. Yes, the candidate is important, but his or her role is to grow the strength of the party.
I just dont see this with a Bernie Sanders candidacy.
