Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI've been thinking all day about the word "lying."
When I'm on a jury, I usually end up not convicting. I have a high tolerance for lively conversation. Of course we have to criticize some candidates to make a distinction between them.
But remember how many months it took before MSM was willing to use the word "lie" in reference to Trump? Who clearly was lying over and over. In other words, "lying" is loaded. It goes straight to motive.
So I don't think it's OK to say things like "Bernie is lying about the real cost of M4A." You can say "The facts don't support Bernie's idea about the cost of M4A." Or "Bernie is wrong about the cost of M4A." But to say Bernie is lying shuts down conversation and play right into the hands of Russia (and China? and???).
How many of you agree with me?

(251 posts)Just allowing, for example, the re-importation of medicine from Canada and other countries would significantly lower the cost of those live-saving medicines in the US. Eliminating insurance takes cost down another 20%.
To say someone is lying about the potential for cost savings when the equation is very easy for anyone to understand is over-reach.
But when some go beyond that to claim that 'people love their monthly private insurance premiums and high deductibles' makes the speaker seem very out of touch.

(5,376 posts)I believe that Bernie knows the difference between the increase in governmeng spending (i.e the amount of additional revenue needed) and the total necessary spending to cover everything. Yet everytime I hear him being interviewed, he always goes on about the "cost" of his plan being only $30 trillion. That is factually incorrect. I'm not talking about whether his costs estimates are accurate (for the record,I think he is wildly underestimating what the costs will be) and for the sake of this point, I'll even stipulate that his number are correct. What I am complaining about is far more insidious. Bernie has been repeatedly claiming that the cost increase is actually the total cost. That is a lie.
