Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumTim Ryan announces... Times says two winning strategies:
one through the rustbelt and one through Texas/ South. Tim Ryan could win Ohio...if he wins Ohio Trump loses . No Republican has ever won the general without Ohio.
'Democratic strategists see two paths to victory in 2020: winning back Midwestern states like Wisconsin and Michigan that narrowly went for Trump in 2016 or southern states with changing demographics such as Georgia and Texas.
You can put Tim Ryan firmly in the former camp.
The eight-term Congressman, who launched his presidential campaign Thursday on social media and on the talk show The View, represents the former industrial hub of Youngstown, Ohio, and he made clear that will be his primary selling point.
In tone and in substance, Ryan laid down a marker that he is going to focus on the working class voters.'

(17,996 posts)Tim yesterday? Get Sherrod on the campaign trail with him.
I notice DeWine has not created any waves. He hates Medicaid. I thought sure that would be first on his list. And Charter schools.

(81,708 posts)Dem Rep. Tim Ryan: It'll be 'very hard' to win House control with Pelosi at the helm
President Donald Trump has opened the door for Democrats to win back the House of Representatives in 2018, Rep. Tim Ryan said Thursday morning, but itll be very hard to do with Nancy Pelosi in place as the partys minority leader.
Ryan (D-Ohio), who mounted a failed challenge to unseat Pelosi as House minority leader last year, told MSNBCs Morning Joe that his party has developed a toxic national brand that will increase the degree of difficulty for Democrats running to unseat incumbents in Republican districts. Already in the slate of special elections to replace Trump cabinet members, the GOP has worked to tie Democratic candidates to Pelosi, a maneuver Ryan said has been successful.

(81,708 posts)As a congressman from Youngstown, Ohio for almost 20 years, Ive watched the American Dream slip through the fingers of many Americans.
Like so many in Americas heartland, I come from a long line of factory workers who helped build our nation into a powerhouse of innovation. But over the last 20 years, failed leadership and broken promises have destroyed the middle-class, forcing our economy into crisis and pushing the American Dream out of reach.
Who was president from 2009 to 2017?

(131,414 posts)but rustbelt was within our reach, and still is imo; not a stretch, just GO THERE, as many will (like Biden, Ryan, etc. and many governors HAVE.) I'm an easterner, so more comfortable understanding such.

cut state and local funding by HALF ....then crowed about he balanced Ohios budget.
Many local municipalities had to put up tax levies just to keep police on the job or keep the schools open.
Places that were already struggling got hit even harder. Unfortunately when you are a Dem state rep swimming upstream in a sea of Red legislators, its tough. Tim has always fought for Lordstown workers, our air base in Vienna, and to see that all working people get a fair shake. The Republicans in Columbus hate him, that should tell you something.

(10,853 posts)Here's a question: what makes Ryan a more viable candidate than Sherrod Brown? Brown absolutely had/has the working class/union creds, is hugely popular in Ohio yet pulled back because he didn't see a path to the WH. At least that's what he said.
What makes Ryan a better candidate than Senator Brown and what path does Ryan see that Brown didn't?

(10,853 posts)But in my mind Brown was a far stronger candidate than Ryan yet Brown said that after early explorations/inquiries he simply did not see a path to the WH. Sherrod Brown was on my list of candidates to seriously look at and then . . .he dropped out.
I just do not see Ryan as a strong/stronger contender for that working-class voter.
I could be wrong, of course. Time will tell.
