The amount of people you alienate by not unequivocally decriminalizing/legalizing marijuana dwarfs those who would be inclined to your incrementalism

(18,372 posts)Legalizing pot on the federal level (rather than at the state level) would contravene an international treaty to which we are a party.

That's how we got a national drinking age. Because one of the stated purposes of raising the age was to reduce DWI accidents and deaths, states that signaled a refusal to comply with the change were threatened with a loss of federal funds for interstate highways.

(2,957 posts)"we still need more research". Freaking really? The government has had like 80 years to prove that cannabis is some kind of plague upon the decency of society. Meanwhile, we continue ruining lives and arresting people every day over this victimless crime. It has to end!

(18,372 posts)Legalizing pot on a federal level would put us in contravention of the treaties.
Until the treaties are amended:

(18,372 posts)The issue centers on the treaties that we signed. Solutions include modernizing the treaties or employing a strategy (legalization across all 50 states at the state level) that won't put us in contravention of the treaties.
You seem to be arguing against someone who is contending that pot is dangerous or harmful.
That's not my contention and that person isn't me.

(2,957 posts)Violate them for all I care? Who is gonna stop us? The UN? Those treaties date back to when Nixon(may he burn in hell) bullied the world into joining in on our ridiculous war on drugs.

(191 posts)Is the legality given the treaties.. I say those can get fixed after relief is given to those hurt by this war on drugs, specifically pot. Realistically those shouldnt delay commen sense domestic policy decisions

(3,056 posts)I think you are implying that Biden will outlaw bongs, pipes and rolling papers. He want to study it and move it from a schedule IV class to a schedule 2. Lets study it! I smoke every day and see this as a good thing and needed.

(33,643 posts)Moving it to Schedule 2 puts it in the class with the most highly-regulated Prescription Drugs, i.e with Hydro and Oxycodone, Hydro and OxyMorphone, Morphine, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Barbiturates, etc, all of which require a Dr. visit for every Rx, and "Triplicate" Rx's delivered to pharmacy in person, and reporting to the DEA.
Is that what we want?

(2,706 posts)And you are worried about pot.
There is no time for this.
This debate should have been about climate change, Bill Barr, and plenty of other topics that are more important than pot.

I dont need to hear about someones motto or pot when we have more seriously pressing matters to attend to. There was 2 hours and they wasted too much of it.

(2,957 posts)It matters to me, and I'm tired of living my life in fear in a non legal state. One more person arrested or having their life ruined over this ridiculous issue is too many. It's safer than alcohol, legalize it already and end this great miscarriage of justice which goes back to the 30's when they criminalized it to persecute minorities.
