Joe Biden was not arrested in South Africa while trying to see Nelson Mandela, his campaign has conceded.
The US presidential contender had repeatedly said he was arrested during a trip there in the 1970s, when South Africa was under apartheid.
But a deputy campaign managers told reporters Mr Biden had been referring to an episode where he was "separated" from black colleagues at an airport.

(8,052 posts)I notice no one said anything about a claim that 150 million people died of gun shootings. Apparently he said that unchallenged? Edit to add: I read that on the internets, so if he didn't say it, then I am wrong.

(47,399 posts)for politicians to embellish some of their stories. I've seen it many times from both Democrats and republicans. And of course, memories do fade and different people have different versions of the same events.

I didn't mean to just put it on politicians, though they can get a bit theatrical at times. We all tend to have selective memories, often with no intent to deceive. People's minds process information differently. We all view the world in our own unique way.

(8,155 posts)An arrest is using legal authority to deprive a person of his or her freedom of movement. An arrest is generally made with an arrest warrant. An arrest may be made without a warrant if probable cause and exigent circumstances are presented at the time of the arrest.
Probable cause is a reasonable belief of the police officer in the guilt of the suspect, based on the facts and information prior to the arrest. For instance, a warrantless arrest may be legitimate in situations where the police officer has a reasonable belief that the suspect has either committed a crime or is about to commit a crime. The police officer might also arrest the suspect to prevent the suspects escape or to preserve the evidence. A warrantless arrest may be invalidated though, if the police officer failed to demonstrate exigent circumstances and probable cause.
The right to make warrantless arrests are commonly defined and limited by statutes subject to the due process guaranty of U.S. Constitution. The suspect arrested without a warrant is entitled prompt judicial determination generally made in 48 hours.
An arrest may trigger certain procedural requirements, such as the person under arrest be given a Miranda Warning.

(62,444 posts)That is the lamest thing ever.
This particular version of lets make up a story to buttress a made up story requires Ambassador Young and Congressman Biggs to have quite a racist-compliant mentality.
There they were, going along with the program, while Biden, the white hero, defied authority on their behalf.
Yeah, I dont think so. This version is astoundingly insulting to the African Americans who were with him.

(51 posts)In this case it's particularly bad, as he is running against someone who actually did get arrested for protesting for civil rights. So it both draws attention to that actual arrest (bad for Biden in the primary), and draws attention to Biden's lie. That's going to play really badly in the general election - republicans don't need to swiftboat him; he's doing it himself.
Aside from that, it's hugely damaging to the party to have that happen on the heels of Hillary doing the same thing last election.
