More Republican groups hoping to meddle in the states Democratic presidential primary on Saturday have decided who will get their vote.
The Greenville Tea Party has chosen to support for Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, as he has risen in the polls and has won the popular vote in the Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada contests.
Former Vice President Joe Biden has consistently led in the South Carolina polls, but the lead over Sanders has shrunk in recent weeks.
Stephen Brown, the former chairman of the Greenville Tea Party, said a few thousand votes may tip the scales of Saturdays primary in Sanders direction.
https://wlos.com/news/election/operation-chaos-2020-movement-encourages-republicans-to-strategically-vote-in-sc-primary
A press release says the movement, Operation Chaos 2020, comes at an opportune time for Republicans since any registered voter is permitted to vote in the primary. Operation Chaos aims to influence the outcome of that day.
In the release, Stephen H. Brown, former chairman of the Greenville County GOP, stated the following:
We are doing this openly, and loudly, to make a very public protest in opposition to open primaries. We want the South Carolina General Assembly to change the election laws to permit certified political parties to hold closed primaries. While our first objective is to protest open primaries, our second objective is to assist the reelection of the President by extending and exacerbating the division among the Democrats. For decades now, South Carolina Democrats have meddled in our primaries, voting for the weakest Republican candidates and cancelling out votes for more conservative candidates. We want them to understand how serious and egregious this is.
Voting in the Feb. 29 primary won't impact anyone's ability to vote in either primary of their choice, Republican or Democrat, in June, the release added.

Always happens if there is an incumbent running and no compelling state wide offices. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a lot of it going on in 2012 when President Obama was running for his 2nd term.

(5,945 posts)If, for example, Bernie were to far exceed expectations based on aggregate polls in South Carolina, then the surprise might be due in large part to the efforts of these Republicans to put their thumb on the scale. If the primary results are more or less in line with the polls, then I'd tentatively conclude the Republicans' effect on the vote was minimal.
Of course, we could never be sure. An unexpected result could be due to a last-minute surge in the popularity of a candidate, or to flawed polling methods. The result would be bitter resentment and contention between the supporters of the various candidates - which is what the Republicans are aiming for. The don't call it "Operation Chaos" for nothing.
So, I guess I'm hoping for our sake that the primary results don't bring any really big surprises.

(22,758 posts)democratic crossover voters to cause any problems in the Republican primary... Bill Weld is a non starter...
per article posted elsewhere in 2016 there were 740,000 Republican primary voters and 370,000 Democratic primary voters
and if Democrats crossed over, it would not be the Bernie supporters that would and therefore that would result in a greater chance that Bernie could win the SC primaries... and that is the driving reason that the Republicans are crossing over to vote for Bernie... they believe that Bernie is the weakest candidate against trump and therefore trump will win
and besides even though we may have to change our behavior to win in November, I am really opposed to stooping to their level
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(10,216 posts)The handful of Trump voters voting for the Democratic leading candidate will have very little impact and is stupid. Limpballs wants you to be afraid and angry. That way you put off other Democratic voters. You could even have long conversations about how we are all doomed.
But a crossover despite the polls...that seem to be wrong a lot more since W...to Weld would carry much more weight. You never know when Trump does something stupid and his numbers will suddenly fall like they have in the past. And if any Trump voter believes Limpballs, then that's one less Trump vote that will make the egomaniac look bad.
It's really better for us to do a cross over than for a Repuke.

After GOP officials urged South Carolina Republicans to meddle in the upcoming Democratic primary, state lawmakers are considering a resolution that may deter them from voting for a candidate they believe President Donald Trump can easily beat.
The resolution, introduced by S.C. Sen. Marlon Kimpson, would lock anyone that votes in the Democratic presidential primary Saturday into voting in the Democratic contest again in 2024. Meaning that voters who participate in what Republican leaders and activists have dubbed Operation Chaos would not be able to vote in what will be a competitive GOP primary during the next presidential election, unless they sign a sworn statement saying they only participated in good faith.
That added provision would give voters in Saturdays primary a way around being locked into the Democratic contest in 2024. It came after heated debate over whether lawmakers should do something about threats to disrupt the primary.
What we have in South Carolina is an orchestrated attempt by the Republican Party to come into the Democratic Party and select who they view as the weakest candidate in the Democratic Party primary, Kimpson, told his fellow senators Wednesday....

The slogan was emblazoned on nearly every piece of official signage at the 47th Conservative Political Action Conference, the annual gathering of the rights most diehard activists that began Thursday at a massive convention center about a half hours drive from the White House.
Team Socialism has a lot of generals and foot soldiers: progressive cultural changes, the deep state, the mainstream media, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Bernie Sanders.
Team America is led by one man: Donald Trump. The presidents emissaries were everywhere at the event, hosting panels focused on teaching the attendees how, exactly, they could help Trump defeat socialism in 2020. The conference was a boot camp for what Trump campaign spokesperson Kayleigh McEnaney called the Army of Trump during a Wednesday panel.
