Op-Ed about E. Warren

Source-https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/02/27/elizabeth-warren-rebounds-after-2020-democratic-debates-column/4882416002/
Title--Warren has revived her 2020 campaign and could be the nominee who unites the Democrats

snip--"But it was Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts who landed some of the most stinging blows and breathed new life into her campaign. Warren came out swinging not just in that debate but also in the one this week in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Democrats are not going to win if we have a nominee who has a history of hiding his tax returns, of harassing women, and of supporting racist polls like redlining and stop and frisk,” she said in Las Vegas. In Charleston, she added financial support for Republican Senate candidates to that list. Bloomberg can’t earn the trust of the core of the Democratic Party, she said, and money or not, that means “he is the riskiest candidate standing on this stage.”

snip--"Sanders’ front-runner status made him the main target in the South Carolina debate. Warren said she’d be a better president than him because she “digs into the details” and makes things happen. She criticized Sanders for not providing enough detail about how he plans to pay for his health care proposals while she dug in, did the work and was then trashed for it by the Sanders campaign. She concluded her salvo by saying: “Progressives have got one shot, and we need to spend it with a leader who will get something done.”

snip--"uniter, not a divider?
After the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, Warren argued that she could unite the Democratic Party, but her case was largely ignored. After her debate performances, there’s reason to pay attention. With her support for "Medicare For All," college student loan forgiveness, free college tuition and universal pre-K, Warren has the progressive bona fides to satisfy Sanders voters.

1. Warren's great! She deserves the praise!

Particularly for the way she "attacked" Sanders in the debate. I'm serious here - it's extremely fair and reasonable to say "I can get this good stuff done more effectively" rather than just slinging mud. And, after all, she's right about the filibuster.

4. I was disappointed in her miscasting another of Sanders' positions last night in her town hall.

I really like her but she has a few times twisted the truth.

Last night she played that line about Sanders creating the rule that superdelegates get involved in the second round at the convention. It’s patently false. She continued that now he is trying to change the rule. In fact, he wanted superdelegates out completely. He was adamant that voters, not superdelegates, should elect the nominee. Keeping them out until the second round was the best result he could negotiate. But it was decidedly not what he was advocating for.

When he was trying to get superdelegates to his side he was just trying to balance the superdelegate influence on the other side.

So to paint him as having wanted something that he now wants to change is a lie. He has been consistent all along and it’s a low blow to disparage his character.

She mischaracterized him a couple of other times. It reflects poorly on her character. It makes me tend to think that the comment she claimed he made about a woman President was also fabricated.

I had to turn off the tv.

9. He was part of it and influenced the outcome and signed on to it.

Both Warren and Sanders are still personally against super delegates and both still agreed to abiding by the rules when they signed up to run.

Sanders supporters are not being truthful when they claim Warren is lying, and I think spreading attacks on her character reflects poorly on those Sanders supporters who also think abiding by rules is wrong.

5. That's what I saw, too. She contrasted with facts not hyperbole or venom.

She does the painstaking part of the research first, develops remedies, fights for her policy positions, builds the infrastructure to implement her plan.

Bernie is great at speaking to crowds and listing the problems, and some of his economic policy positions are formed by the decades of research performed by Warren and other academics.

2. Do blows add value?

I don't especially care for slugging your way into a nomination. "But it was Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts who landed some of the most stinging blows and breathed new life into her campaign," suggests that the way to win is to berate your opponents. Maybe it is. If so, that's sad. I like Elizabeth Warren as a candidate, but not because she can land stinging blows.

Joe, if a male candidate "lands blows" on a rival, that is most often business as usual. May/ may not be right morally , but when a female candidate is sharp and pointed and does not back down, society at large disapproves.

Sen McConnell said in Feb 2017 about Seen Warren... "Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech. She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.". Wiki is the source.

I've been a daily reader at DU for more than 10 years. I just don't post often. I don't agree with "lands blows" whether the puncher is a male or female. And FYI, at this point Sen. Warren is one of my top two preferences. Sometimes she's number one, sometimes number two; positions change based on when the candidates say something of substance that causes me to give extra credit. My preferences have nothing to do with which one has rehearsed the best zinger. Few of the "blows" are spontaneous.

Warren morphs into a ruthless assassin when confronting corruption. Trump is the most corrupt person to gain the WH.
