Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIf we're going to win in November,
We cant come out of the convention divided. If it gets ugly, if a huge chunk of the party feels cheated, we will not have time to mend those wounds before Election Day. I get the concerns about Sanders (I honestly had hoped hed sit this one out) but please ask yourself... honestly... *if* hes clearly the front runner... are you absolutely certain the elusive moderate Republicans/Independents/Dems you may draw in with someone else will outweigh the Bernie supporters who will be so turned off by the process if he doesnt get the nom after coming in to the convention ahead (Assuming a hefty lead, not a slim one)?
Stop Bernie at all costs can be just as dangerous as Bernie or Bust

(713 posts)There is no other remedy for it. I will fight hard and vote for whoever gets the nomination and that includes candidates that I am not particularly happy with, like Bloomberg. If Bernie is the nominee, I will fight for him and vote for him. If Biden is the nominee, I will fight for him and vote for him. If Warren is the nominee, I will fight for her and vote for her. And so on. It is as simple as that. Vote Blue, no matter who.

At which point how things are handled by everyone involved (candidates, campaigns, supporter) will be critical. Getting the nomination may be a first goal, but its not the goal. Beating Trump is.

I agree with you also. It is like the Chinese Proverb- "May you be cursed to live in interesting times." Whatever the outcome, it has been something to chew on for politics junkies like myself.
But seriously, we must stop Trump at all costs. To do that we will need a cease fire between different factions in the Party. Hopefully we will not wound ourselves to the point we can't fight Trump effectively. There does seem to be a lot of bad blood amongst us here. We will need to overcome it, and pretty soon.

(6,043 posts)Placating the disappointed is a separate matter. If Sanders and his team have a responsibility to educate his followers now about the rules he agreed to; the followers also have a responsibility to educate themselves. Do we really think it is necessary to dumb down our process? I don't think it is. I think the Sanders followers are intelligent and capable of understanding the rules.
The issue is whether Sanders and his team insiders are going to choose to model the democratic process or inflame.
What seems to be happening now is that we are being turned into a focus group-to see whether there may be some winning arguments to be made for breaking the rules. But instead of this being done transparently, it is being done as a manipulation.
Time might be better spent in registering people to vote in November and helping them get to the polls

(32,017 posts)When all the voting at the convention is done, it will be his task to convince some disappointed delegates, and the party as a whole, to rally around and support the party's nominee.
I have every reason to believe that he will rise to the occasion.
