(25,428 posts)Because there's no agreed-upon definition of what a Democrat is or should be. Party ID is self-assigned and self-defined.

(25,428 posts)I actually like the statement from a purely sarcastic perspective.
The only real Democrat is the Independent is actually kind of brilliant as a sarcastic statement and a bit of irony. I think that might have been the intent of the poster, who did find it "funny".

(25,428 posts)"Corporatist" makes me twitch. Corporatism is a real concept with a real definition that means almost exactly the opposite of what its users on DU think it means. It means organizing society based on common interest groups, like agriculture, labor, scientific, etc.

(10,014 posts)Unpledged delegates are set to represent about 16% of the overall convention votes (4,754 delegates, 4,750 votes), though reforms severely restricted their ability to vote on a first ballot,[5] and come from several categories of prominent Democratic Party members:
30 distinguished party leaders (DPL), consisting of current and former presidents, current and former vice-presidents, former congressional leaders, and former DNC chairs
236 Democratic members of the United States House of Representatives (including non-voting delegates from DC and territories)
48 Democratic members of the United States Senate (including Washington, DC shadow senators) and Bernie Sanders, an Independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party
28 Democratic governors (including territorial governors and the Mayor of the District of Columbia).
438 other elected members (with 434 votes) from the Democratic National Committee (including the chairs and vice-chairs of each state's Democratic Party)
Personally, I find the first four categories nobrainers; these are the people who have done the hard work for the party.
The fifth category, however, could be trimmed from 438 to fewer, maybe just include the chairs and vice-chairs of each state's Democratic Party. I noted that the people listed as Iowa Party chair and co-chair are from the 2016 cycle and are not the people currently in those positions.
My question: How is Nina Turner a member of the DNC?
