Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBillionaire Steyer shakes up primary with slavery reparations plan
For centuries, South Carolina's Charleston was the largest port of entry for the transatlantic slave trade. Now, a billionaire activist named Tom Steyer is shaking up the state's Democratic primary by advocating slavery reparations for African Americans.
A California financier turned philanthropist and environmental campaigner, Steyer has poured tens of millions of dollars into the state ahead of Saturday's vote -- with a single-minded focus on the black voters who make up 60 percent of its Democratic electorate.
How South Carolina's African Americans vote in the White House primaries is traditionally a key indicator of which contender has nationwide support from the black community -- a crucial Democratic constituency.
Flooding the airwaves with promises to compensate the descendants of slaves, and to invest in universities in historically marginalized black communities, Steyer -- who lags far behind his Democratic rivals nationally -- has hoisted himself into third place in state polls, behind Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

(14,570 posts)we're not ever going to actually grow up as a people. That really does include some reparations, or something to compensate for slavery, followed by years of Jim Crow, followed by the Republican Southern Strategy, and now Trump. His dad wore the goddamn hood, for God's sake.
We've been going the wrong way on this for centuries, and while I generally believe campaign promises are cheap, simply because a president has to work with Congress and that necessarily involves debate and compromise, it is one that needs to be kept.
The American Indians too. That probably isn't the politically correct way to talk about the Cherokee and Navajo and all the others, but we've really screwed them.
We're talking genocide with both groups.
Well...........you know this. I'm preaching to the choir here. But Steyer didn't get my vote for Super Tuesday. Warren did. Warren got four votes from my family on the strength of a) her policies, which are very good, b) her performance in the debate in NV - that won over my daughter and wife. Both of them were cheering when she went after Bloomberg.
