Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPlease Don't Make Us Vote for Bernie, These Carolina Voters Say
An inanimate object, an anonymous bus driver, a fictional character.
But that doesnt mean some are necessarily happy about the possibility of having to vote for Bernie Sanders in November.
Its a prospect that can tend to give away a persons true feelings in grimaces and groans, a reluctant I guess, if I have to, grasping for words and giving a look like, Lets hope America doesnt put me in that position. Its a potential future that makes Debbie Meekins, a 55-year-old supporter of Joe Bidens have to laugh just moments after enthusiastically watching the former vice president walk into a South Carolina campaign event this week.
Not good, but I'd vote for him, Meekins said about her feelings towards a Sanders general election campaign. (Its) one of those, I'd vote for Mickey Mouse over Trump.
Sadly, it is what it is, she says. Sanders is as polarizing as Trump, but in the other direction.
Ahead of Saturdays primary, some Democratic voters in South Carolina who are either undecided or support other candidates said theyll side with the Vermont senator if he does indeed make it to the general election.
For them its more out of a necessity to oust the incumbent, in their minds, than because of a growing affection for the 78-year-old democratic socialist turned Democratic frontrunner. And many are not entirely convinced hell be able to oust the Republican from the White House if he gets the chance.

(11,986 posts)If you actually believe that 50% of Sanders voters won't vote for a non-Sanders Democratic candidate, then you should definitely vote for Sanders instead of Biden. Here's why...
SCENARIO #1: Biden as nominee. If you think that 50% of the Sanders voters won't support him that means candidate Biden gets 100% of the Biden voters but only 50% of what were the Sanders votes.
But since you're saying non-Sanders supporters are more willing than Sanders supporters to hold their nose and vote for whoever the Dem candidate is, that means... SCENARIO #2: candidate Sanders gets 100% of the Sanders voters AND 100% of the Biden voters. That's a lot more votes. Therefore, against Trump, he is much more likely to win!
But in fact, as 2016 showed us, the vast majority of Sanders supporters WILL vote for the Democratic nominee, so luckily, you're not going to be forced to have to vote for Sanders in the primary. Whew!

Doesn't mean Bernie's my first choice, though and we're entitled to have our own opinions our first choices. That's why we have primaries after all.

(9,323 posts)I am assuming that by "liberal" you are bunching the supporters of Warren and Sanders into the same camp. There is no evidence that the SC voters are objecting to this encompassing definition of "liberal".
It is not liberals that they are objecting to, it's a certain type of a liberal. And they refer to him by name.

(9,288 posts)There were Clinton supporters who felt this way when Obama won. The important thing is that we all unite at the end to defeat Trump this November.
And you are right that I am using a bit of a broad brush describing many of both Sanders and Warren voters together.

(25,471 posts)Of the remaining candidates, Sanders supporters are, by far, the least committed to voting for other Dems if Sanders isn't nominated. In that context, it's relevant to the conversation.

(7,886 posts)Sanders has the Base of the party, and they showed up in 2016 despite the hate that is heaped upon them. That poll holds zero substance, just look into the methodology, should never have been published.
I'm far more worried about the moderates because last time they didn't get their candidate they actually did vote republican in significant numbers. Fortunately Obama was solid enough to overcome that.
