Major loss tonight for Bernie Sanders.

This past week was the first week that Sanders ran as a clear front runner, and it's been a disaster. He failed miserably to broaden his movement, and huge parts of the party are expressing outright hostility to his nomination.

So far, he hasn't shown that he can move from an insurgency campaign to a clear leader.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

The base of our party here is African Americans. Get a moderate candidate who excites our base and we will win again.

We would have won the governorship last year had Bernie not come down for an unasked for rally for Gillum designed to push Bernie more than Gillum.

From then on the republicans tied the African American Gillum to socialism. And he still lost by less than .5 percent of the vote.

Democrats can win here. Bernie is poison here. Biden wins Florida by 3 percent.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – As the South Carolina Democratic Primary approaches, candidates are planning their campaign stops in the Palmetto State.

Bernie Sanders’ team has announced he plans to visit the Grand Strand ahead of Saturday’s primary.

A rally will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., and the event is free.

Entry is based on a first come, first served basis.

Sanders will also be making appearances in North Charleston and Columbia ahead of the South Carolina primary.

With one win in SC, and enough delegates in Iowa and Nevada.

Compared to Sanders, won one state, tied one state (with a Mayor), and lost one state (to a Mayor).

Of course the decision Bernie made to go back as a registered Independent after he failed to win the Democratic nomination in 2016 probably did not exactly help him win much loyalty with the Democratic voter base either.

100+ Black Writers and Scholars Endorse Bernie Sanders

"A Sanders presidency would go a long way toward creating a safer and more just world," the endorsment letter states. "The commitment to free college education, the elimination of student debt which so many of our students suffer under, and the enfranchisement of incarcerated citizens, are only some of the reasons we have come to this conclusion."

The academics—including Princeton University's Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Temple University's Marc Lamont Hill, Harvard University's Elizabeth Hinton, and Darrick Hamilton of Ohio State University—also noted Sanders support of a commission to study reparations for slavery and heralded his "staunch commitment to the needs of poor and working people over the course of his career" as key reasons to back his candidacy.

"In this crucible year of 2020, when so much is at stake, not only for Black people but for all people, and all life on the planet," the letter states, "we feel it imperative that we step outside of our classrooms and go beyond our campuses, to speak out on the current presidential election."

snip

and then there's this:

the latest Reuters/Ipsos national poll showed Sanders leading the Democratic primary field among black voters, with 26% who said they support Sanders. That compared to 21% for Michael Bloomberg, 20% for Joe Biden, and 14% who said they were not sure.

141. You know...
Sun Mar 1, 2020, 06:42 AM
Mar 2020

...the only people here who want my resume all the time, seem to be Sanders supporting kids with pretty strong questions about my resume.

Is there any real reason that I have to educate Sanders supporters?

I recently had to put on my ignore list a really, really, really dumb guy who considered his Ph.D. in protein dynamics an exercise in - his words, not mine - "dick waving" while making idiotic comments on my intellectual credentials.

Apparently, this moron thought that because he was a "scientist," he knew all about climate change, even though he had clearly never opened a book on the subject in his narrow life.

I know the type very well.

If your claim is that because one hundred black intellectuals - who you do not list - support Sanders that therefore all black intellectuals support this tired dogmatic old white guy who hasn't changed his mind about a single thing since 1969, then clearly that says something about you and not black intellectuals.

How is it that I am required to list black intellectuals for your amusement? Who are you to me?

I get very, very, very tired of bad thinking, but let me try to address this....

There is a commonly understood practice in bad thinking called, Appeal to Authority.

A few years back, while wandering in the bowels of Princeton University's Firestone library I came across a strange little monograph in German written by a Nobel Laureate, Johaness Stark, the physicist who discovered the "Stark effect," the discovery that spectral lines were effected by magnetic fields. The effect is quite real, and remains, over a century after its discovery, an important physical fact.

The library has apparently moved the book off the shelves to "RECAP" a warehouse for books not commonly read anymore, but one can still get it if one is interested.

Here it is: Adolf Hitlers ziele und persönlichkeit, von dr. Johannes Stark

I think the University should have left it on the shelves as a lesson in appeal to authority arguments.

The book, written in 1932, before Adolf Hitler took power, which translates into "Adolf Hitler's Goals and Personality" is all about how wonderful Adolf Hitler would be for "German Science."

For further amusement, one can read the 1945 Farm Hall Transcripts where one German Nobel Laureate, Otto Hahn, tells another German Nobel Laureate, Werner Heisenberg, while they are discussing the subject of the practical results of American scientists, that he is a "second rater" whereupon Heisenberg agrees.

This may be found in the transcripts (translated into English with a foreward by Jeremy Bernstein) on page 118:

hahn: At any rate, Heisenberg, you’re just second raters and you might as well pack up.

heisenberg: I quite agree.

hahn: They are 50 years further advanced than we.

heisenberg: I don’t believe a word of the whole thing They must have spent the whole of their £500,000,000 in separating isotopes; and then it is possible.11

Hitler’s Uranium Club

The point is that it is possible to be an intellectual in one area, and be absurdly naive and even something of an idiot in another.

Here is my opinion: Senator Sanders is no intellectual, given the fact that his rhetoric is quite as simplistic as that of the orange racist in the White House. The fact that he is on the left and that he is not a racist, at least not overtly, makes him preferable, to be sure, to the orange idiot, but it is clear to me that as opposed to other Democratic candidates, he will be unable to arrest the destruction of our country.

If we wanted a left leaning President who is also a flexible thinker, we would vote for Ms. Warren, since she is intellectually and ethically very much more sophisticated than the tired old white Senator from Vermont. The tired old white Senator from Vermont rather like the MAGAT king, feels himself to be superior to all others, including the entire Democratic Party, purely an avatar of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Now. Again. This is my opinion. It doesn't matter if I unload trucks at the West Windsor Walmart or his I am the Director of the Institute of Advanced Study, if I trim the bushes at Princeton University or if I am a tenured professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department.

I can respect the thinking of powerful minds in one area, while completely discounting the thoughts of the same minds in other areas.

If there are 100 black intellectuals who support Senator Sanders, that's fine for them. This has nothing to do with whether Sanders would be as good a President as any of our other candidates, all of whom are quite happy to be Democrats and do not regard themselves as above the Democratic Party.

I would think we've had enough of Dunning Kruger avatars who hold themselves in high esteem, and I have no respect at all for the political opinions of any intellectual who cannot grasp this fact, no matter which giant ego they support, and no matter what their accomplishments might be. If they support Sanders, in my opinion, thinking for myself, they are fools.

Got it?

No?

Why am I not surprised?

He has shown that his campaign still has life. I did predict this. Joe will get a surge out of tonight. It is just a question of how much going into Super Tuesday. My prediction for that is a battle between Biden and Sanders this Tuesday.

Can one get an advantage over the other, or will they split votes and delegates in the Super Tuesday contests? If they both do well but have pluralities and not majorities, the contest might continue on past Tuesday. It will be an interesting contest, a real showdown, I think.

One of the issues with Bernie is his history of being unable to form coalitions. His "My way or burn down the party" way of doing things.

He would be a disaster to down-ballot candidates in tight races.

I don't like him. He is not a Democrat. He only uses the Democratic Party when it is convenient for him.

What this does is make the likelyhood of a brokered convention seem even more likely.

Our two front runners, Biden and Sanders, may have to find a way forward in the convention

102. Bernie's Bill 97 TRILLION
Sat Feb 29, 2020, 10:14 PM
Feb 2020

Black people in SC just know Bernie is too pie in the sky. Promises he won't ever be able to keep. Below is an article from Daily Beast detailing the trillions Bernie thinks he can get to do all of what he claims he can do.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/in-bernie-land-dollar42-trillion-in-revenue-pays-for-dollar97-trillion-in-spending?ref=home

In Bernie Land, $42 Trillion in Revenue Pays for $97 Trillion in Spending

By Brian Riedl

First, it is worth noting that Sanders’ spending promises total as much as $97.5 trillion over the decade.

Sanders concedes that his Medicare For All plan would increase federal spending by “somewhere between $30 and $40 trillion over a 10-year period.” He has promised to spend $16.3 trillion on his climate plan.

And his proposal to guarantee all Americans a full-time government job paying $15 an hour, with full benefits, is estimated to cost $30.1 trillion.

The final $11.1 trillion includes $2.5 trillion on housing, $1.8 trillion to expand Social Security, $1.6 trillion on paid family leave, $1 trillion on infrastructure, $3 trillion to forgive all student loans and guarantee free public-college tuition, $800 billion on general K-12 education spending, and an additional $400 billion on higher public school teacher salaries.

Bernie must get a huge Democratic Senate and Congress to even have a chance to get these trillions of dollars.
Its actually kind of ridiculous to think he can get all that money from the antihuman GOP.

Biden has been pouring money in S.C. for a long time. As he said, or didn't say depending on when you asked him, S>C> was his firewall.
So the focus on a single state out of the first four pretty much guarantees a top finish.

But we should note there are lots of states ahead. Will Iowa Biden show up or South Carolina Bide? We have yet to see.

Oh as a side note its interesting that you're framing this as a defeat for Sanders rather than a victory for Biden.

Sanders has peaked. Call it a fade, underperformance, inability to build on positives. There is simply a bit of not-so-fast in voters' minds. Frontrunner status brings extra scrutiny, and voters find things they don't like but previously ignored.

It is also very difficult for a candidate running an insurgency campaign to be the frontrunner becauase insurgency implies constant dislike - even anger - at the status quo. Well, an insurgent in the lead becomes part of that status quo.

Look, Bernie will probably head to the convention with the highest number of delegates, but that's all. He cannot persuade all factions of the Democratic party to follow him. He's incapable of doing so. He's running an angry campaign, and angry campaigns have limited appeal.

Populism and the politics of division are what I want to see replaced, not repositioned to the left. Bernie runs against the Democratic establishment, by which he seems to mean any Democrat who doesn't support his utopian fantasies. Unless Bernie becomes a Democrat instead of Democrats becoming his followers, he won't win the Presidency as a Democrat. He already knows he can't win as a "progressive."
If he really wants Trump gone, he would withdraw.

I'm voting for Warren on Tuesday. but if he gets the nom, he gets the nom. i'm not afraid of his policies, because to me, they are very similar to Warren, and they resonate well with more people. that's why his grassroots campaign has grown so huge, why he has such a large turnout. why he has been able to collect so much fundraising. but i think Warren would be a better president. you guys talk a lot of trash about Bernie, but it took 32 years, two presidential nominations, for Biden to get his first, first primary win. you guys act like he just won the presidency. you guys are funny.
