Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhen Holyfield beat Tyson the first time, his speech after the fight was nauseating
I'd been cheering for Evander, it was a fantastic bout I watched with a bunch of friends, almost all Holyfield fans, we were all goin' nuts.
Then when he was interviewed after he won, it was a non-stop Praise Gawd Praise Jeebus My Lord In Heaven Strength in Jeebus blah blah blah.
It was nauseating.
You know what? I still like Evander Holyfield and think he's a great dude. I still much prefer him to Mike Tyson. As a man, he does not make me ill in any way.
But that particular speech?
Was pretty f***ing nauseating.

Nauseous means something that causes you to feel sick. A synonym would be "sickening". Nauseated means you feel sick.
The misuse is really common.

(33,643 posts)in the past that a speech JFK gave 'made me physically nauseous'.
It's consistently being presented as "Bernie said JFK made him nauseous" ... implying he found the man himself repulsive ... when that's clearly not what he said.
It's very possible to find a particular thing someone said nauseating, doesn't mean you don't love and respect that person.
I really didn't intend for what I was getting at to be difficult to grock ... apologies on that.

(43,867 posts)... he said he was very excited about Castro's revolution in Cuba. Excited and impressed by it.
But you're splitting some very fine hairs on this. Bernie remarked that something JFK said made him sick. By the very action of Kennedy speaking the words that caused Bernie's reaction, Kennedy made Bernie sick.

(33,643 posts)Giving the impression that Bernie said "JFK makes me SICK!", like, as a human being. Like we'd say "Trump makes me sick".
That's the part I object to. It's a distortion of what he actually said.
You want to attack him for his praise of the Cuban Revolution, I get it, that's perfectly fair. Nothing wrong with making our objections known based on accurate representation of facts. And there's plenty of those to bring up that are NOT in Sanders favor, if one is so inclined.
I'm just really tired of spin, man ...

(43,867 posts)Bernie emphatically said something JFK said made him not feel well. In any world, that translates into JFK made Bernie sick or nauseous or ill. An action by JFK did this. So, JFK did this.
It's consistently presented as "Bernie said JFK made him nauseous"
I don't know about that. The very link you gave had commentary by four people in the OP.
DU'er pbmus, who said "Another reason why Bernie is a risky candidate..."
Malcolm Nance, who tweeted "this video & others of Bernie praising communism & Soviets will be played nonstop by Trump who will use his own words to call him a commie lover. Bernie is a disastrous choice! Dems will have to defend Hs words we havent even seen yet. Russia will find them."
And Bernie Doesn't Like Babies or Dogs who was originally tweeted the video, who said, "JFK Made Bernie Physically Ill--says there really was no difference between Kennedy and Nixon."
What Bernie said: "I got up in the room and almost went to puke... clearly there wasn't really a lot of difference between the two."
So from four different voices on the link you sent, none said "nauseous."
There's a lapse of logic on your part. If I said "Bernie makes me sick" in reference to the video, EVERYONE would know the things he has said and done on that video makes me sick.

(33,643 posts)No idea why anything I've said leads you to believe I'm trying to nitpick the meaning of these words
My issue is not particularly in regards to this post from today, that's only what reminded me of the fact that I've been irritated with for awhile.
Try googling:
"bernie says jfk made me nauseous"
And check out the LONG list of headlines, and their verbiage.

You are correct in that it is not 'wrong' in terms of being correct English to say "Bernie said Kennedy made him nauseous" ... when it's in regards to a specific action.
But most people, when reading those words, would conclude that he said it about Kennedy IN GENERAL.
I believe that's being done to make what he said ... sound as offensive as possible.
I call that spin.
I'm done arguing, either you get it at this point, or you don't. Good day ...

(43,867 posts)First you entered into some sort of grammar lesson on how to properly use the word "nauseous."
Then, you contended the video is "consistently presented as 'Bernie said JFK made him nauseous'" when it, apparently, isn't... at least based on the link YOU provided.
Then you went on a hair splitting exercise on whether it was JFK's words that made Bernie sick/ill/nauseous/what the fuck ever or if it was JFK himself that made Bernie want to puke.
LOL. Spin.
At the end of the day. Bernie said JFK's Cuban policy made Bernie want to puke. Good luck in Florida bro's.

(33,643 posts)I never a goddamn word about the proper use of 'nauseous'. WTF are you even talking about?
Did you google what I asked you to?
Did you go to ORIGINAL post from awhile back on DU about this subject I linked to?
I never said anything about that video, I brought up that post merely because it illustrates it's still being talked about today, and still being presented in that way. Today's post has the words: "JFK made Bernie Physically Ill" ... which is why I used it as an example earlier.
There's a difference between:
"Sanders said JFK Speech made him nauseous"
and
"Sanders said JFK made him nauseous"
It's simple to say the former, it's one extra word. But ... look at the headlines in google. It's VERY consistently the latter.
I believe that's being done on purpose.
You don't have to believe the same, I really don't care. We can agree to disagree, fine by me.
And I'm far from a Bro, bro. I don't hate him or anything, but I don't want him as our nominee, period. I want Biden or Pete if I had to pick my first two ATM.
HOWEVER ... I do recognize he could end up being our nominee, and people misrepresenting what he said in this manner and making it headlines all over the world ... SUCKS for us that are going to end up having to defend him.

(2,042 posts)The OP seems to feel like Bernie is being attacked (by Malcolm Nance in this case) and is upset about that. Or they are upset that Holyfield (Biden) drew sharp contrasts between Bernie in his victory speech last night which the OP found offensive. Or maybe they are upset with Bernie, which seems at this point, the least likely of those options.

(7,715 posts)Bernie is going to get tarred and feathered over stuff like this. Yes, it's in the past but since when has that been a limitation on Rus-publican smears? The swift-boating of John Kerry went far back too.
I'm sorry, but IMHO, Bernie has been far too divisive and he's not a Democrat. Those are deal breakers for me. There is far too much hanging in the balance to have Bernie be the head of a party he's not even a member of!
i know several decent folks who are Republicans that are disgusted at Trump. They would gladly vote for Biden, but they will not vote for Bernie if he is D party choice.
This is not an election for a revolution. We've had that revolution under Trump, and look where it got us. The best change comes incrementally. We were doing ok until the "Trump Revolution". I just want to get back on course and then make changes over time. I honestly think most people in America are like that, which is why, again IMHO, Biden is the CLEAR choice.
If Bernie doesn't get the nomination and runs as a third-party candidate, it's clear what his role was to be in all of this. If he does happen to lose the nomination and truly supports the D nominee, I will continue to have respect for him as a valuable member of the Democratic caucus. If we wins the nomination, I'll back him all the way, but he will lose.
