Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJoe Biden: Strongest Against Trump
"A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll suggests that Sanders could be a riskier nominee than his supporters are willing to admit. In a national trial heat with Trump, Sanders led 48 percent to 42 percent among registered voters. Yet when the playing field was narrowed to the 10 states that were closest in the 2016 presidential election and that will likely decide 2020 Michigan, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida, Minnesota, Nevada, Maine, North Carolina and Arizona Sanderss lead over Trump was slashed in half (48 percent to 45 percent). That 3-point gap was within the margin of error.
In contrast, former Vice President Joe Biden led Trump by 9 points nationally (50 percent to 41 percent) and by 7 points (50 percent to 43 percent) in the battleground states."

The article goes on to discuss the other candidates in the field as also weaker than Joe.
I am re-posting this because I strongly feel the message from this poll needs to resonate with every Democrat.

(7,428 posts)If Biden can bring out the vote in a general election, he should be able to lure the very same voters to the primaries ahead of it.
Making your case primarily on the electability question seems to be a kind of circular argument.

(38,439 posts)...Trump tried to sneak information out about Joe's son from outside. Trump was impeached because of the way Trump acted. That evil aspect of Trump becomes total when Joe is our nominee.
.. Back to Sanders. the issue changes to "socialism" vs Trump. Is that correct? You may say .."No" that is not correct. Sanders stands for this and for that..Trump with his money and position will combat Sanders with the "socialism" tag.
.. These polls show that Joe is our strongest candidate. His name highlights that Trump is a crook. Forget the rest. Those two ideas are enough for me.

(251 posts)As much as many of us like Bernie, he is going to cause consternation when he not only loses to Trump but drags down the Senate and Congress, and next November it will be one of the greatest political disasters in American history. A Trump victory and the loss of Congress and the Senate.
The reality is that Biden, although not a charismatic as an Obama, will not only beat Trump but maintain the Congress and most likely get the Senate. Its a chance for a landslide.
With Bernie, a landslide its highly unlikely to happen, in-fact he might lose to Trump. It's not a critique of Bernie or his supporters it just the political reality in our country...that they are NOT progressive.
The argument of the progressives that WE NEED SOME EMOTION AND EXCITEMENT, therefore, Bernie should get the nomination is a bogus argument in that often there are winners who aren't charismatic and " exciting". Look at the rout that Lyndon Johnson did to Goldwater in 1964. And most of that landslide victory was based on the fear of a right-wing fanatic like Goldwater getting in. So, the idea that a negative( fear of a candidate) can't win is not the case. Johnson WAS NOT exciting, yet he clobbered Goldwater in a landslide.
Jimmy Carter wasnt EXCITING when he beat Ford. It was a response to the corruption of the Nixon administration.
Now, with Trump's corruption a non EXCITING candidate like Biden can crush Trump.
Biden can do the same thing to Trump and not only keep Congress but get the Senate.
And the Dems rout in the 2018 mid-terms would continue and not be sidetracked by Bernie's radical agenda which isnt in-tune with the American political scene.
This is the best argument against the "Bernie is so exciting argument."
WE CRUSHED THEM IN 2018 AND IT WAS NOT BASED ON EXCITEMENT.
It was based on the fear of a horrible person like Trump. So indeed fear and a very decent candidate like Biden can CRUSH Trump.

(251 posts)I agree with your post.
I like Bernie and if I were appointed God, I would make him president.
But the sad reality is that this country IS NOT ready to vote such an extreme agenda in a president. Thats the political reality. I wish it wasnt so but it's too much of a gamble to take.
A Trump victory and the down-ballot damage Bernie can do would be catastrophic.
A decent Liberal like Biden is good enough rather than Trump.
