Republicans voting in S. Carolina? Maybe 5%

I was going to ask this as an open question but then I found this.

Despite Trump’s urging, an exit poll from the Washington Post showed just 5 percent of registered Republicans actually voted in the primary, a number too small for pollsters to give details on which Democratic candidate received the most votes from that group. Registered Democrats made up 70 percent of everyone who voted in the primary, while independent voters accounted for 26 percent, according to that poll.

Both South Carolina Democrats and independents voted for former Vice President Joe Biden over Sanders; 54 percent of registered Democrats voted for Biden compared to 18 percent who voted for Sanders, and 35 percent of independents voted for Biden, compared to 23 percent who voted for Sanders.

But that support apparently has limits. If Trump’s theory was that he could get his supporters to juice Sanders’s South Carolina numbers enough to change the outcome of the Democratic primary, he was wrong. Biden’s South Carolina victory was decisive, especially among black voters, who made up over half of the voters on Saturday. Overall, the former vice president received nearly 50 percent of the vote.

So while Trump remains an overwhelmingly popular and influential figure in South Carolina politics, the Democratic primary also served as a reminder that there are limits to what Trump can convince his Republican supporters to do.

That's how Cantor lost to Brat in 2014. There was no Dem primary because they didn't see the need to spend money against Cantor. However in an open primary many Dems like myself took full advantage of another chance to vote against Cantor. Brat's margin exactly equaled if 5% of the people in the 7th who voted for Obama (140,000) voted against Cantor.

It's useful to local elections where a few hundred temporary flippers can squeeze a candidate off the ballot. It helps suppress fringe candidates in both parties in that respect.

The amount of Republicans that would have to come out to make an actual difference has to be pretty large, and there just aren't enough Republicans that care that much to come out and vote in a Democratic primary.

Maybe Bernie got 1% extra from Republicans, but maybe .3% too.

Trump DEMONIZES Democrats every day, how does he expect his followers to go out and cast even a primary ballot for any one of them? These are voters who bifurcate everything into Jesus vs the Devil, and they view Democrats as the Devil.

"Go vote for one of the Devils" puts Trump in cahoots with Satan.

19.9% becomes 14.9% if those 5% were not able to cross over and vote. 14.9% is below the viability threshold.

Even 1% could cause a poorly performing candidate to get delegates they may not have deserve. Open primaries and cross-over voting and same-day party-switching need to be eliminated (and caucuses need to go to.)

Though in TN, we once had crossover voters so high that they elected a former KKK dipshit as a nominee for a district. It works where there is heavy gerrymandering and there is tons of voter suppression and intimidation.

It doesn't have much of an impact without other types of voting system corruption.

And now in East TN we even have paper ballot back ups.
