Sanders should drop before the party is irreparably harmed

Sanders is doing significantly worse than 2016. In some states 50% less votes. Yes he dominates the youth vote but the youth vote is historically flaky that’s why 65+ voting block is huge every election because they are reliable, consistent voters.

Bernie got smoked this Super Tuesday by Biden who had barely any spending in several states. Sure Bernie has huge rallies in MA and MN, but rallies don’t equal votes. Several polls had him winning handily. This Tuesday is an abject failure for his campaign. He splits delegate counts in every state he won. After next Tuesday it’s going to get further out of reach. If he can get past his ego and he truly cares about the party and left political advancement he should drop. Otherwise we all get screwed with a repeat of 2016 that will be much worse.

Maine for example: 2016 sanders 64.3 Clinton 35.5
2020 sanders 33.1 Biden 33.9

A 30 pt drop when you’ve been campaigning for 4 years?! That doesn’t exactly exude confidence for a victory.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Just as meaningless as claiming a candidate winning a state that will go Democratic in the general is proof of their viability.

Winning or losing a primary in which only Democrats vote says nothing about how a candidate will fare in a general election when facing a larger electorate. Suggesting the former is a predictor of the latter makes no sense.

I wish people would stop making this argument. It makes them sound unserious.

Sanders has single-handedly done more to right the ship of the Democratic Party than anyone else in the last 20 years.

He is essentially an FDR Democrat, operating in an era characterized far too much by center-right capitulation and abdication of critical regulatory responsibilities.

His voice is important and genuine, and he speaks for many, many people. Myself included.

And at the end of the day, whoever is the nominee will get my support 100%. I trust everyone here can say the same, and that if Bernie is the nominee that will likewise hold 100%.

The nation and the world face a dark future if Trump's drive toward dictatorship is not thwarted. In a battle this desperate, we cannot afford to attack and wound our allies.

But I'm not sure why it's even worth it to argue whether he cares about the party. He clearly does not. He cannot look beyond his own personal interests. It's one reason for his inability to form coalitions that not only doomed his campaign but also affected his legislative achievements.

... regarding Bernie's accomplishments and how others feel about him, and his inability to "work well with others". Many here and elsewhere dismissed her comments on Hulu and characterized her as being bitter or "lashing out", but as time goes on and as the vetting continues, I'm more and more convinced at how right she was. Very insightful... plus... she'd obviously been talking to many others, privately, who had not shared their opinions in writing or in any sort of interview.

My state doesn't vote until late April and I would like the chance to have a say. And I think calls for Bernie to drop out are pretty ironic coming from supporters of a candidate who was left for dead less than a week ago. How about we let everyone vote unless someone gets to 1990. I wasn't planning on supporting Bernie this year, but if Warren drops out I just might. And posts like this are making me more inclined to do so.

That said, if neither gets to 1990 but Biden has a plurality, I hope Bernie will stand by what he said at the last debate and step aside.

"But now they have a different predicament. Democrats find themselves in a bit of a rerun of the Sanders-Clinton race of 2016. Whatever happens in the rest of the primary season, Sanders will have substantial support — and a large number of delegates. If he loses to Biden and doesn’t embrace the Democratic ticket, his supporters might stay home in November, handing victory to Trump."

84. Sanders should keep fighting as long as he has a viable path to the nomination
Wed Mar 4, 2020, 02:21 PM
Mar 2020

… and he should never stop fighting for what he believes in. It would be a disservice to all his supporters who put their hearts and souls into his campaign.

Sanders should drop out when he is no longer viable for the nomination, at which point he must put his heart and soul and his followers into the campaign for defeating Donald Trump -- the existential threat to our democracy and all the issues WE ALL care so very much about.
