(14,750 posts)There is nothing unusual or sinister in it. There is no blocking going on.
People are just being strategic. Does suck if you aren't part of the party though (pun absolutely intended).

John Edwards (2008, dropped out days after the SC Primary)
Bob Kerrey (1992, withdrew several days before the first multi-state vote on 3/3)
Tom Harkin (1992, withdrew the day before the first multi-state vote on 3/3)

(10,500 posts)He dropped out after the Florida primary. The media wasn't acknowledging Hillary's victory there, because the DNC stripped the state of its delegates for holding its contest too early. But Edwards indicated that he was motivated to drop out by his lackluster showing in Florida.
In 2008 the Florida primary was held on January 29. Super Tuesday was one week later on February 5. Edwards dropped out on January 30. So he left the race 6 days before Super Tuesday. But that also means that he left the race 1 day after the final primary before Super Tuesday. Similarly, Pete Buttigieg left the race 1 day after the final primary before Super Tuesday.
The South Carolina primary was on January 26 that year. So Edwards actually left the race 4 days after South Carolina voted.

(423 posts)Regardless of what his reason was, we learned soon after he dropped out the real reason - the thing where he couldn't keep it in his pants while his wife was sick with cancer.

(11,605 posts)3 days before the Nevada caucuses and a week before super Tuesday. He dropped out after losing South Carolina, just like Buttigieg and Klobuchar.
