(151,269 posts)Some candidates typically draw a uniform sort of crowd. Others typically draw a more diverse crowd. There's something to be learned from that.

(51,271 posts)The whites there were friendly of course, but there were very few non-whites so I stuck out a good bit. Great to see diversity of race, age, and gender on the Biden side. He's going to need a broad coalition to win.

(151,269 posts)from the black community. Apparently that was true in the city where he was the mayor, as well. That definitely hurt his campaign.
For national Democratic candidates, it's crucial to have the support of all communities. It's hard to with without that.

(31,261 posts)Buttigieg didn't seal that support by being an activist presence in the Black community and bringing the police department under control. South Bend is majority Black. If Buttigieg had done the things that I mentioned, he would be headed for our party nomination now, speaking as a Black person, we are like old fashioned Mafia Dons, we fondly remember our friends and deal with anyone who is not.

(53,214 posts)I've always liked it when I was in a group where I was a minority. Some of the best places that I have lived or worked were those that were very diverse. I really learn so much when I am around people with different backgrounds, nationalities, race, religion, etc. The more we get out of our bubbles, the more possibilities open up for everyone.

(151,269 posts)I have supported several Hmong candidates for office in the past few years. The first time I put up a yard sign for one of those candidates, one of my Hmong neighbors came up to me when i was mowing my yard. He is an older man and doesn't speak English well. I speak Hmong only enough to say greetings and thank yous. We know each other from helping with snow removal for neighbors who don't own snowblowers. Both of us clear snow from the city sidewalks for most of our side of the street and we often meet while doing that.
Anyhow, he smiled and pointed to my yard sign and said, "Hmong! Good. Thank you."
One of the things I love the most about living on the East Side of St. Paul is the diversity here.

(53,214 posts)I lived in a high rise building in Chicago and I met people from all over the world. I learned so much about other cultures and some of them became good friends. As a young mother, we were able to bond over children and parenting. In the end, no one was really all that different. The differences were mostly surface. Also got to try some new and interesting food!
The most diverse place I've lived, however, was Sacramento. I met people from countries I didn't even know existed.

(151,269 posts)I had always lived in small communities. Not by design, but by happenstance. I traveled a lot while in the USAF, but settled in a small coastal city in California.
We move to St. Paul because her parents needed help in their waning years, and here we are. I'm enjoying the more diverse population here, along with the ability to meet more people, try cuisines from around the world, and just generally be exposed to interesting things.
We'd move again, now that her parents are gone, but can't afford to do so, so here we stay, at least for the time being. I don't mind. She would rather move somewhere warmer.

(53,214 posts)but I suppose that is true with most urban areas.
I don't blame your wife. Minnesota is really cold. I'd prefer a warmer climate, but this is where my son and my grandchildren are. I wouldn't want to miss a minute of watching them grow.

(151,269 posts)Part of that is due to lower property values than Minneapolis or the suburbs. It's amazing to meet people from all over the planet almost anywhere in the city.

(151,269 posts)Still, young voters are not all Bernie fans. Some young people are, of course, but far from all.
It's not uncommon for young people to turn out at political rallies. Their energy and enthusiasm is part of every campaign.

The media and politicians like to put people into broad homogeneous categories, but people are individuals, not the tags that are put on them.

(29,949 posts)If I was in the picture no one would see. Also all disabled are usually in one preferred location. At a Biden event I was placed in the first row of the reserved for VIPs section. I got to meet all my local candidates.

All without proof beyond a handicapped parking permit that may or may not have been mine. Which it is, but who knows really?

(13,390 posts)This attempt to highlight inclusion failed because there are not disabled people in the picture. It is particularly glaring when you have experience with being excluded from the broader society by the I've got mine industry and model he caters to.

(16,385 posts)Thats laughable. Hes a solid liberal Democrat who has a wide variety of support, much more than Bernie. Bidens record, for the most part, is about helping everyone in the country, not just rich, white, males like the Republicans do. Im disabled too, btw, and I feel very good about Biden.

(151,269 posts)illustrate the difference, in racial terms, between groups of Biden and Sanders supporters didn't also include people with visible disabilities. That was not among the parameters I was comparing. After your reply, I did a different search that found photos that did include them.
I'm sorry to have disappointed you, but I was illustrating a particular thing.

(13,003 posts)The Dems don't pay certain groups to appear at their rallies, and place them in the seats immediately behind their candidate.
It could be handicapped access, or could just be that none of the handicapped went to the rally or were physically able to go to the rally.

(13,390 posts)Because she knows who the experts are. Joe has zero expertise in the area and it is obvious that he does not value us as people by his position on healthcare.
Since you used the word "handicapped" the old "they don't leave their homes, why have t5he ADA" reference, your perspective is as ableist as it gets.

(16,385 posts)hes not for single payer doesnt indicate he doesnt want good healthcare. Hes for expanding the ACA to increase subsidies and include a public option. That will solve a lot of the healthcare issues we have in this country.

(16,385 posts)but M4A will not pass in the near future, even with a Democratic-led Congress. Its better to at least take a step toward universal coverage rather than getting nothing at all.

(16,385 posts)that many of the House and Senate Democrats wont vote for single payer. I dont like it but its our current reality. I will say that there are several examples in Western Europe where they dont have single payer but still have achieved universal, affordable, coverage. France and Germany come to mind.
