Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumVice President Pick
I read so many posts that suggest that the Democratic candidate should pick a woman or an African American or whatever.
Please don't use such characteristics as criteria!
We are in serious times. When, hopefully, our new Democratic President begins to try to right the damage that has been done during the DT Administration, he/she will need all the help possible.
Please pick the VP with the most brains, integrity, experience you can get. Don't worry about the optics

(13,538 posts)Not an answer, but OK.
The pick just has to be a well known, competent person. Yes, notoriety is important even though it shouldnt be

(3,431 posts)... if you are just looking for a female you may end up with a Sarah Palin, if you are looking for only color you may get a Herman Cain.
They can be one or both but 1st it is about their substance and character.

(13,538 posts)I've posted elsewhere; the VP pick will be what makes many decide their vote. It MUST be someone who is ready day one to take the office of the presidency. I believe the choice of Palin is a big factor in McCains loss. NOBODY could imagine her taking over

(16,385 posts)There are many women of color who are just as qualified as white males. There are plenty to choose from so staying with the status quo isnt necessary.

(13,538 posts)DU votes arent what will win this election. It will be the votes of lots of people who rarely pay much attention to politics. So it needs to be a name they know, whether WE like it or not. Sen Harris is a name that most people know. Stacy Abrams is not. Both could do the job, but one will get the recognition over the other. The only reason trump won was because of his celebrity. Its sad that it matters, but thats where we are in the 21st century

(16,385 posts)Im just saying we can surely find a well qualified person of color. I wouldnt be too unhappy with Beto ORourke though, because he might put Texas into play.

(1,206 posts)but fortunately, there are some amazing people who are both black and female who would be outstanding picks.
My favorite is Stacey Abrams if that route is chosen.

(42,862 posts)It's not "optics" ... it's strategy. We want to win. The VP choice should be someone who gives us another "edge" or advantage over the GOP.

(11,222 posts)(not your post). But the suggestion any of our women or blacks would be optics. Not smart enough. A Palin.

(42,862 posts)... and it sounds much different when written down (compared to how they thought it might sound while it was still an unfinished thought in their head.)
At least that's what I hope to be the case.

(51,269 posts)I'm voting blue because it matters who. Biden will pick the VP with "the most brains, integrity, experience you can get" and that includes many women and minorities because all sorts of Americans have those qualities.

(693 posts)There have been a number of reports that trump will throw pence under the bus and replace him on the repug ticket with nikki haley. This would be an obvious attempt to attract women voters.
So to counter this, I would like to see a woman vp candidate on the democratic ticket.
