Don't get me wrong...I'm all for slowing and preferably halting climate change and providing health care to as many people as humanly possible, if not everyone. That's what a majority of people want.

But dammit, when you propose some of these much-needed programs then at least show a little initiative and figure out how much they're gonna cost. The best way to ensure that nothing will ever get done is to never attach any realistic price tags to them. Americans have the right to know how much they will cost and how we're gonna pay for it.

Until then, whenever folks like Bernie & AOC talk about such things all they're doing is expelling yet more carbon dioxide and only making global warming that much worse!

Thu Mar 12, 2020, 07:03 PM
Mar 2020

This is a very defeatist attitude, and I understand where that its coming from because Biden is also a skeptic on the issue, although he is a Democrat, he is not a progressive, he is more of a conservative Democrat, which is also understandable due to his length in public office and the policies he is accustomed to deal with, lets face it, it is a different generation with more conservative values. I am not including the word "conservative" to resemble anything republican by the way, just want to make sure people who read this understand it.

Here is the link, before I forget:
[link:https://www.factcheck.org/2019/03/how-much-will-the-green-new-deal-cost/|

The cost of NO GREEN DEAL will be devastating. There is so much that can be done with taxes, cuts to the military, etc. The 2020 budget for the military is $738 billion (a $22 billion increase over last year’s), that is coming from tax payer contribution, so are the tax cuts. As the World becomes warmer pandemics like the one we live today will become more frequent, because virus and bacteria love the warm weather, it makes us all more vulnerable, so instead of thinking that the "Green Deal" is something funny, we all need to support it, it will affect those who will still be alive in 30-40 years, and it will definitely affect our kids, and their kids. It is not far fetched to imagine a World like the one in "Total Recall", by making the World a harder place to live we give more power to those who already have the power, we become their subjects just so that we can exist.

And here is part of AOC's proposal for the "Green Deal":

An outrageously bogus lowball is not much better than a "hell if I know". But I notice she said "at least"...which is pretty damn open-ended.

I've seen estimates by engineers that indicate halting global warming will cost the entire world in the vicinity of $50-$70 trillion. Since the US is the second worst polluter behind only China, we will have to bear a large portion of that cost.

Don't know about other folks here but I believe engineers a lot more than I do AOC...being one myself who has worked on wind turbines in the past.

Yes, I agree, 10 trillion may be low, but we don't know everything it entails and I believe they don't know either, they have allowed republicans to drive the conversation about money and of course, if you don't have your plan fully developed you can only guess.

My take on this is that we all need to support it, we need to push for people like AOC to continue working on it because if we don't do anything we are all toast, and I mean "toast" because we are all going to burn.

We have to do something and we have to do something soon. Step One is to get a Democratic White House and a Democratic Congress with people who will make this a very high national priority. It will never come to pass as long as the GOP is in power.

I applaud AOC for helping push this issue to the forefront. I just don't want her to be put in charge of budgets...LOL. The GOP and FOX will use her as a lightning rod to discredit the effort but that probably can't be avoided anyway.

Slowing/halting climate change will be very costly but eventually it will be even costlier if we continue to do nothing. I just want people to know what kind of dollar signs we're talking here is all. I think that is only fair and reasonable.

I will research it, but I have hard time she would say something like that.

Her appearance at Fox News doesn't damage the party, she was asked a question and she answered it truthfully but, I do need to watch the video and see for myself.

Thu Mar 12, 2020, 08:00 PM

We, as a country, need to support progressive ideas, otherwise it will be more of the same, nothing will change, we will be stuck on this system that has gradually become so difficult for so many people and that has been slowly crafted by corporate, the military and republicans, we need to change things, and radically.

This system is getting worst for people who do not have the resources to go to school, to pay for health, the american dream of the 1950s is no longer alive and we must all come to grips with that. People like AOC need to push hard for change.

I am a Democrat, but I want things to move forward, for opportunities to be available for everyone, not just for a few.

Man Of The Year: Lyndon B. Johnson, The Prudent Progressive

http://content.time.com/time/subscriber/article/0,33009,841674-1,00.html

Goldfish Bowl. All this was done while his country and the world watched in a "show me" spirit. Jack Kennedy had drained the world's capacity for unrestrained fascination with the U.S. presidency, and Lyndon Johnson was sure to harvest some initial resentments. But in that enormous goldfish bowl, he went relentlessly to work, determined to put his own stamp on the presidency, rarely trying to be anything but himself.

I was just a dumb little kid at the time but my respect for the man continues to go up as I learn more about him.

There was some early, but it really ramped up in 1966. Lucky for him (and us), 1964 and 1965 were remarkable legislative years.

We're within a couple of hours of the LBJ Presidential Library, the Texas White House, his boyhood home, and various other LBJ sites and museums. We make the rounds every year or two with various friends and relatives who come to visit. I'm a history buff, but I had no idea just how much stuff got done in those first couple years.

You had a radical left wing who hated LBJ because of Vietnam while at the same time he was pushing through some of the most progressive social and economic legislation since FDR.

That damn war destroyed the man. He got himself caught in a quagmire and couldn't figure a way out. Still hurts his legacy because many/most people still remember him for the war rather than his progressive successes.

A lot of his "wounded warrior" art was in a museum in San Antonio on a traveling exhibit. We were there with relatives and didn't know it was going to be there at that time. I have to admit that it was pretty interesting. Horrible president, but unlike our current resident of the WH, he had some redeeming qualities, even if they didn't measure up to the bad.

Agreed on LBJ's legacy. His museum has a whole section about how Vietnam overshadowed his achievements and talks about what his legacy would have been, but also acknowledges that they're impossible to separate.

It is true that young people did not vote in the numbers that was expected, she told the truth.

My theory on this is that young people tend to register Independent, they don't want to belong to any of the two parties, they don't have confidence on any of the two, and if Biden does become the nominee, and if becomes president he better deliver to young people, that includes "Medicare For All", and "Free Education", not this "two-year college" thing he has been talking about. If he doesn't deliver he will be a one-term president and we will have the republicans back again in power.

Thu Mar 12, 2020, 07:40 PM
Mar 2020

Who is asking for "gimme"? Because of "Medicare For All" and "Free Education"? Like many other countries in the World, that is part of what government is there for, to provide basic needs to its citizens, and THEY ARE NOT GIMMES, WE ALL PAY THROUGH TAXES.

Lets see, where do I rather have my taxes go to..hmm..."Medicare For All" and "Free Education"? or trump's golfing outings, politicians & their families free healthcare, politicians travels around the World, $768 billion in military budget, which they don't need?

So, it is OK for the military to extend their hands (gimme) and receive $768 billion in money they don't need of which $20 billion were added this year...

Ask Canadians, if you don't feel like traveling to Europe. They don't mind paying higher taxes because they get both, healthcare for free and free education.

If we had an educated country trump and assholes like republicans would never be elected, just take a look at the people in trump's rallies, like he called them "his uneducated", and they cheered. That is what "Free Education" gives us, it gets rid of ignorance, it helps people like the MAGATS understand and repudiate people like trump, it helps them make a better life for them, a more decent life, less ignorance gives us less racism, less misogyny, better people in general.

I hope that I did not misunderstand your quote, if I did please expand on it.

if he's elected. Remember that LGBTQ activists consistently held Pres Obama's feet to the fire re: military service-after they'd shown up and vote for him--until he got it done. And with things like M4A and education, it means pressuring congress members even more than it means pressuring the president because they'll have to write the bill (or at least help write it) and get it to his desk. Same with a reasonably acceptable piece of immigration legislation.

That pressure we all applied to congress when there was a threat of overturning ACA? We will need that and then some.

Sander and Biden also appeared in Fox News, if anything, it may be a good idea, we all know Fox news viewers need some educating, and to see rational people like those three may be a good idea. I know it is a lot to hope for, but who knows, it may light somebody's bulb.

Ry Cooder (musician) went to Cuba and found old Cuban musicians that Castro's regime had not allowed to go anywhere, or do anything, but Ry Cooder got them out of the dark, invited them to record and "Buenavista Social Club" came about. Great Music.

Anyway, they ended up playing at Carnegie Hall, and as one of them was walking around New York, he kept saying "this is wonderful, people are great, I never though this was like this, they lied to us", so my hope is that one of their appearance in fox news will have the same effect on some MAGATS.

Here is one of my favourite songs from the Buenavista, its happy, and the words have a double meaning, which is funny, and the guy who plays that Cuban guitar is incredible:

I was not antagonizing people at DU. If you disagree with my opinion, that OAC should not be lying about the Sanders's loss, state it. But, stop attacking me personally, I have not attacked you.

You feel antagonized by my opinion? Think about what OAC did. Rather than blindly believe.

Well, I think one thing that we — that isn’t being talked about is the rampant voter suppression in this country,” Ocasio-Cortez said, alluding to the long voter lines seen on Super Tuesday in Southern states like Texas, where hundreds of polling places have been closed in recent years. “Right there, in Ann Arbor, where we had that rally, those kids were waiting three hours in line to vote in Michigan. And so when we talk about who’s turning out and who’s not turning out, we absolutely…”

“So, just to be clear, you’re saying that you think voters didn’t get to vote that wanted to vote in Michigan?” Baier broke in to clarify.

“Absolutely,” she confirmed. “You know, obviously there’s also more that we need to do in terms of turning out youth voters. It’s, we need to make sure that we’re inspiring young people to turn out, but when you do turn out, you should not be waiting three, four, seven hours in order to vote. And that causes people to leave.”

Why is this such a big deal? She didn’t say Democrats caused the long waits on college campuses.

Why isn't AOC going around claiming "voter suppression" in California? They shut down thousands of polling stations from their last primary and the resulting lines there were much longer than in Michigan.

When Bernie wins states that do this, not a peep outta her. When Bernie loses states that do this, it must be due to some nefarious plot against him. It can't possibly be that the people in Michigan actually prefer Biden to Sanders.

Either this gal ain't quite as smart as many people seem to assert...or she's being extremely disingenuous.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
