'He is still in': Bernie could remain in race through June

The Democratic primary calendar, reshaped by the coronavirus crisis, offers some incentive for Sanders to continue on.

Since his staff announced last week that he is reassessing his campaign, Bernie Sanders has not yet definitively said whether he is still running.

But he’s given every indication he’s pressing forward — and perhaps remaining in the presidential race for months to come.

Despite Joe Biden’s nearly insurmountable delegate lead, the Sanders campaign said he plans to participate in an April debate, if one happens. His team has held volunteer organizing calls in the past week in New York and Pennsylvania, which are planning to hold their primaries perhaps as late as June. And his campaign is also touting that it is ramping up staff in New York, which a senior aide said is “a sign that he is still in.”

Sanders, who hasn’t aired ads or fundraised since losing badly in the March 17 primaries, could still very well call things off. But one thing is certain: He’s not acting like a candidate who’s finished with the primary.

You know Bernie already lost. He is just going through the motions and running in place. This cannot possibly alleviate any fear of Biden you may have. He can't even affect Biden's margin of victory. The longer Bernie remains in the race, the less relevant he gets. You don't really think it's good, do you?

I was sure he would do the right thing and concede after last Tuesday’s primaries. Now, he’s just a spoiler, helping to ruin our chances against Donald Trump. It really is shameful.

What Bernie is doing now – through his own words, actions, and the conduct of his campaign – is a deliberate attempt to undermine the man who IS the presumptive Democratic nominee. And one can only wonder what he hopes to gain by doing so.

I’ve tried to give Sanders the benefit of the doubt for a long time but I simply can’t anymore. He’s actively hurting our chances in November and doesn’t seem to care.

Bernie's people are continuing to stir up outrage and false stories about their opponent, just like '16; Bernie claims he's holding out to allow people to vote and claiming that this will force changes at the convention, just like '16.

Frankly, he could have dropped out last week and used his "progressive influence" to swing this race and become a hero, but Bernie seems incapable of accepting that he has no way of winning, short of destroying his opponent. When he loses primaries, Bernie claims "we won the ideological debate"; when he loses a debate handily, Bernie claims that it's media bias or that there should be even more debates. Frankly, I'm exhausted from politicians claiming shit that's just not happening or true. Now is not the time for these types of games that the Sanders campaign is waging. American lives hang in the balance. All other candidates realized when their time was over. Bernie, and his ideas, are no better than anyone else...time to do what's right for the country, but I won't hold my breath.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

In '16, Bernie had, and exploited to his advantage, the benefit of doubt. Coming to the convention, he claimed he would bring new voters to the General election. He pledged support for the Democratic Party. He even implied that he will remain registered as a Democrat past the elections. None of it materialized. He dropped the "D" label as soon as it became convenient, His demands for changes in the Democratic platform were met without the promised reciprocity on his part, his new votes never showed up to vote for Hillary in any meaningful numbers. It was a serious miscalculation on the part of the DNC to take Bernie's promises so seriously.

Bernie no longer has this benefit of doubt. His position within the Democratic party apparatus is much weaker today, not in the least because he keeps attacking the party and its members. His word is not worth what it used to in '16. Even his position within his movement is not what it used to be: the extreme radicals coddled by Bernie are sensing his weakness, and slowly but surely taking over, thus irreparably damaging the movement in the process. Bernie doesn't appear to be able or willing to control them any longer. His political career is nearing its end.

Time, and the Democratic Party along with it, is moving past Bernie. He only has months of relative credibility left, and he is wasting it as if there is no tomorrow. If he goes on like this he will completely discredit himself by the time of the Convention.
