Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumA millennial has taken the stage and he is extremely impressive.
We have a millennial making waves as he campaigns to be the next Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party. It really is exciting and he shatters every myth that millennials have been unfairly tagged with, as a whole. Some of the most amazing people I know hit early adulthood at the turn of the century.
Buttigieg is wonderful in so many ways. He is mature beyond his years and a great reflection of what I feel is going to be a great generation that will fight to make the US a better country than they were raised in. We are already seeing some of it in Congress.
Millennials unite. I think Mayor Pete is someone who can get them to the polls. I also think he is someone who will drive them back to the polls after Harris wins the primary.
He is going to be amazing for our Democratic coalition in the decades moving forward.
Go Mayor Pete.

(658 posts)But, deep down, we all love our country and our whole field of candidates. And we give each other some leeway to stand up for our chosen ones. Go Pete! Go Harris!

(658 posts)We older folks have some wisdom about presidents. We've seen a lot of them, and Pete has everything one could hope for in a candidate. And he's the only one with military experience -- which means he will be very unlikely to draw our country into a frivolous war.
I could go on and on, but my primary point is, I agree with you!

(6,319 posts)I supported Harris since before she even announced her run but switched to Buttigieg who is a true powerhouse with a political and oratorical talent matched only by Obama and Bill Clinton. Harris is great for California, I just cant imagine her winning MI, WI and PA where Buttigieg is nearly guaranteed to win being the only candidate from industrial midwest. Those three states are the only ones that will count in general election (popular vote is 100% irrelevant). He should be able to carry Ohio also.

(3,259 posts)That is a bit too simple of a narrative. There are other high elector states that swing as well. Clearly we need to win more of them than last time around.
I also think we currently have a handful of contenders who could potentially win.
I really like a number of people in the field.

(6,319 posts)the most logical way is to select a candidate from midwest. Remember, Obama was from midwest.

(3,259 posts)Winning the mid west is important. It was so close in some of those states that winning some and not others is a real possibility. Its nice that we have other major electorate swing states as well.
Eliminating candidates by region is a poor tactic, in my opinion.

(1,882 posts)I remember well what Lee Atwater did to Michael Dukakis after he left the Democratic convention with a 17 point lead in the polls. Hopefully, Pete would have people close to him who have battled on the Presidential level before.

(3,259 posts)He has shown a toughness by not being bombastic about the release of tapes having to do with a police chief that was fired. I see that a lot different than some people making very wild assumptions. Each move he has made appears to be in the protection of his constituents and possible whistleblowers. Its a tough position and I could see some politicians handling it in a way that would gain them favor over what is right.
He also seems to have hit a chord with major Democratic leaders over the last couple of years. He opens the door for them. He seems like a sponge just soaking up knowledge.

(66 posts)He's literally at the cutoff age to be considered such. He'll be 38 this year, right? Personally I think the start date should be more mid 80's than early 80's. But, we're already on to the next generation, so....what do we call them? The Naughty Generation? I've heard iGeneration too.

(54,410 posts)Millennial for me (and a lot of others) means born 1981 to 1995 or 1996 (I prefer 1995 because that is a 15 year span)
I have seen it taken up to being born in 2000, even 2005 but that makes little sense to me.
Buttigieg was 16, 17, and 18 from January 1, 1999 to January 1, 2001. That certainly makes him still in his formulative years during the actual millennium flip (whether you think that happened Jan 1, 2000 or, like I do, January 1, 2001). I remember it, just not at a fully-formed adult level.
