O'Rourke unveils $5 trillion plan to combat climate change

EL PORTAL, Calif. — Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke has announced his first major policy initiative, a $5 trillion plan to combat climate change that he says will keep the Earth from sliding past the point of no return in less than a generation.

The former Texas congressman unveiled his proposal on Monday before a tour of California’s Yosemite National Park, a dramatic backdrop for a move he hopes can jumpstart a campaign that began to much national fanfare but has seen some of that luster fade in recent weeks.

The plan calls for increasing taxes on “corporations and the wealthiest among us” and “ending the tens of billions of dollars of tax breaks currently given to fossil fuel companies” while offering federal grants to encourage innovative improvements in housing and transportation. It seeks to spend $5 trillion over 10 years to improve aging infrastructure nationwide and to take “significant actions to defend communities” preparing for intensified floods, droughts, hurricanes, fires and other natural disasters fueled by a changing climate.

Like others in the packed field of Democrats seeking the White House, O’Rourke promised to sign climate change-fighting executive orders on the first day of his presidency — including rejoining the 2016 Paris Agreement, from which President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S.

Beto looks like a candidate in search of an issue to kick start his campaign. Problem is, most of the popular issues have already been taken. If wish more candidates would start calling out trump on his bullshit instead of trying to win a base we already have. I know it's early, but I want to see more attacks on the monster we have to defeat. Un less you weaken him and destroy him first, none of these great ideas will ever get off the ground.
Which is why I think Joe is the guy who can do it. Joe came out swinging and forcing trump to re-live and double down on his racist remarks regarding Charleston. Attack him before he attacks you.

His base certainly doesn't care that he is an asshole.

Turnout is key.

BTW Beto has attacked Trump repeatedly - in fact, he attacked Trump plenty in his speech yesterday

Keep attacking trump while putting forth a positive agenda. If we don't define trump early and often he will define us. I like Beto but he doesn't have the fire power yet to affect anything. It's still very early, maybe he can gain some traction as time goes on. Until then I'm supporting Joe because at this point in time he has the best voice to take it to trump and win.

There isn't anyone running who is better at challenging Trump's lies and BS on those things than Beto.
Beto is the most charismatic candidate running and the most charismatic has won EVERY SINGLE TIME since the 24 hour news cycle became reality.
Beto shows up and talks with and listens to EVERYONE. That's how he got more votes in Texas than any other Democrat in history.
Beto have proven his ability to mobilize the youth vote...which he brought up 500% in Texas.

Beto has a message of unity and he is exactly someone who can bring this country together.

He should put out a detailed policy, like he did for climate change. In particular, he should close the loopholes that let businesses hire illegal immigrants without verifying work eligibility.

But I'm sure he will put out a plan on that too. He has been wisely going around and talking to voters and local leaders to find out what is important to them, listening to ideas, suggestions, etc. That's how he is forming his policies..based on what the people want. Leaders who serve the people do that...they represent the people. That's the kind of leader Beto is.
