Great photos, too.

“Anybody want a beer?”

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg yelled into a crowd frantic supporters following his lap around the Polk County Steak Fry. The democratic candidate had just led a rally of around 1,300 supporters into the Water Works grounds and was now bartending beer after flipping steaks on the grill. “Customers up here!”

But the frenzy around Buttigieg didn’t begin in the Steak Fry grounds. The mayor’s campaign bought two lots outside on the ground’s periphery and was able to fill the space— the large number of supporters and over 100 staff member—in addition to volunteers— came to support the candidate.

I think he has the best ground-game in Iowa,” said Susan Matos, who works in healthcare, from Bettendorf, Iowa. “I notice his supporters more than anyone else. I think his supporters have gone a bit unnoticed but I think the Steak Fry is going to put him on a platform. I was blown away at how many of his supporters were here.” . .

“I’m from a rural area, where Obama won twice, and then Trump won by 20 points. I know what it would take to flip the area again,” Nolan said. “Pete can really speak to rural communities because he’s from there. [Rural areas] feel really condescended by some candidates, but I can people back home voting for Pete.” “He couldn’t lie if he tried,” said Emilyn Crabbe, 20, who also attends Drake University. “The first thing I noticed was his honesty. What I want America to be — I see in him.” . .

Calm, honest, smart, ethical. A great way to bring people together, instead of the divisive politics of the current occupant.

I feel so hopeful.

Let it be.

Way back in May, I predicted to my son and a skeptical political friend that Pete would be our nominee, and I continue to stand proudly by my prediction, for just the reasons you stated.

The author of that earlier article about the South Bend fundraiser noted (in the context of healthcare policy, but I think that this applies across the board) that Pete has an uncanny way of unifying people (in a realistic way - not papering over differences, but reminding people of their common dreams and common needs and shared values, despite those differences) rather than terrifying 1/2 of them. This magical ability will be key to winning the GE. (Which I also think he will do, provided that we have any semblance of a fair election )

I also feel that he's a breath of fresh air, and brings much-needed fresh energy to the country. I feel like we've been living in the movie "Groundhog Day", stuck in the same conversation and the same memes, year after year, for the last 40 years or so. Please please, let's change the conversation. Please please let's (as Pete would say) change the channel.
