President Biden says the more than 500 new sanctions the U.S. levied on Russia are meant to serve as a consequence for Putins aggression abroad and repression at home. Peter Alexander is joined by Kelly ODonnell, former U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, and Alexander Vidman, former NSC Director for European Affairs, to discuss.
Why does it take an event like the assassination of Mr. Navalny to do these sanctions? These could have been done two years ago, and I think we need to change our mentality about sanctions. Every day that Putin's army is parked illegally in Ukraine, there should be new sanctions, McFaul says. We're facing a second year anniversary, we have not done enough to help Ukraine, to help avoid U.S. involvement, U.S. troops eventually facing another war in Europe, Vidman adds. - Ared on 02/23/2024.

OP
Totally agree...why not sanction hard and completely from the beginning? Understanding the EU needed time...

Well said. Of course much of this could be solved if we were able to move forward on desperately needed Ukraine aid.

...to deal with its energy fuel dependency on Russian oil/gas and some things can't take affect immediately but don't get the rest of the dribble, dribble, dribble. Also think ghost fleet tankers illegally transporting Russian oil should be seized and start an escalating sanctions or penalty regime on those like China and India that are enabling Russia. And with the House dithering over desperately needed Ukrainian aid while wasting time on Mayorkas and Biden impeachment is truly like Nero fiddling while Rome burns. The situation with Russia is bad. It CAN get much worse without timely and direct action.
