11. When I was in the early grades, we used to say the "school prayer" every morning along with the Pledge

It wasn't very "religious," all I can remember was the end, "our parents, our teachers and our country." But when I was still in elementary school, something changed and instead we observed "a moment of silence" when we kids were told we could pray if we wished. Then suddenly that was eliminated, too, and nobody missed it. If this was too "religious" for public schools when I was a little kid, how are The 10 Commandments okay now??

12. When I was in first grade, we did the pledge plus the Lord's prayer and a Bible verse

I remember my Jewish friend covering her ears during the Christian religious instructions. I’ve never forgotten that and I’ve always been against religion in public school. We were six years old. The next year, the Supreme Court made its ruling, and we only had to do the pledge. When I was in second grade, the teacher kept forgetting to put in the under God part because she had learned it before it was inserted

13. That Supreme Court ruling could have been what eliminated the "School Prayer" when I was in school

And I grew up in a fairly diverse community and many of my classmates were Jewish, Black or whose parents were immigrants. It makes no sense, given the diversity in this country, to force kids to embrace a religion that their families do not.

14. Religions can be a very sensitive thing because people learn it from their mother and their families

So to insult or disregard their religion is doing the same to their family and make them feel the same way

Though in my family it was my father who insisted that I continue going to church with the family and sent me to boarding school (though it was his mother's idea) where we had "chapel" every day and required religion classes. I can remember being tested on The 10 Commandments there. *sigh*
